Robbins and Scott make easy work of competition at NN Invite

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The Newport News Invitational showcased two of the state\'s best cross country runners in Woodside senior Derrick Robbins and Western Branch freshmen Aurora Scott.

Robbins, a Group AAA state title favorite this fall, made easy work of the competition as he won in a time of 15:28. Robbins won in convincing fashion as finishing 32 seconds behind Robbins was Western Branch senior Adam Hutton in a solid time of 16 flat for runner-up honors individually.

Drew Midland finished third behind Robbins and Hutton in a time of 16:21 as the Ocean Lakes senior helped lead his squad to a win in the \"A\" division race. Teammate Liam Arocho (8th, 17:04) also had a strong individual performance to complement Midland. Ocean Lakes finished with a team total of 56 points as they outperformed Central Region squads Maggie Walker (2nd, 74 pts) and Lee-Davis (3rd, 96 pts).

Western Branch freshmen Aurora Scott drew respect from the high school coaches of Virginia prior to even running her first ever high school race as she was given the number one ranking in the entire state in the pre-season rankings on MileStat.com. Scott showed on Saturday at Newport News Park that she can live up to all of the hype as she posted one of the fastest times ever recorded on the Newport News Park 5K course with a sizzling time of 18:09 to win the \"A\" division race. There was no questioning her dominance in the race as she finished an astonishingly 1 minute and 34 seconds ahead of the second place finisher Samantha DeAlto of Maggie Walker (19:43).

The Maggie Walker girls also came in with a lot of pre-season hype as well being ranked #1 among AAA schools in the first rankings of the season. While many teams will challenge their top ranking, they were clearly the best team on Saturday in Newport. The Lady Green Dragons placed five runners in the top 15 including DeAlto. Following DeAlto were Stella Askin (4th, 19:55), Emily Wauford (9th, 20:56), Carly Levenson (14th, 21:15), and Rachel Leary (15th, 21:17) to combine for a team score of 44 points as they finished far ahead of the Scott led Western Branch squad (75 pts). Maggie Walker also ran without their top runner in Ritchie Vaughan.

There were also some notable performances in the \"B\" and \"C\" division races. In the \"B\" division boys\' race, the first two finishers came from Peninsula Catholic with junior Steven Voltz (1st, 17:00) and Bobby Lindemann (2nd, 17:07) having strong races. Voltz and Lindemann should fair well come championship competition in the private school ranks.

The second fastest time by a girl on the day was \"B\" division winner, Emily Webb. The sophomore from Gloucester had an impressive run with her winning time of 19:35.
