How Pollock's 1000 time ranks historically

Mills Godwin senior Grant Pollock recently turned in a sensational 1000 meter performance of 2:29.37 this past weekend, which would rank him as the 10th fastest all-time in the event in Virginia high school indoor history. However, he will have to achieve the time again on an indoor track to be listed on the all-time list which includes only performances from meets held indoors. Pollock ran his time in an outdoor polar bear meet at Douglas Freeman High School, which is certainly allowed in qualifying him for district, regional, and state competition in the event but cannot be listed among an all-time indoor list.

Nonetheless, the performance is noteworthy indoors or outdoors as Pollock is inserted below in the below updated top 25 all-time 1000 meter list. If his time were ran indoors, the Mills Godwin senior would hypothetically be ranked 10th fastest all-time. Not including Pollock, 10 of the top 25 all-time performers have ran their times in the past three seasons (2007-2009) including defending Group AAA state champion Anthony Kostelac (#25 2:30.51) who is planning on competing in the fast New Balance Collegiate Games 1000 meter run next month to lower that time while doubling back from the Millrose Games mile the night before.

David Gunnerson of Grafton is another active high school runner on the list with his #20 all-time 2:30.15 performance last year at the New York Armory and will likely be back in the loaded 1000 field again this year. Cody Snyder of Lee-Davis, the early US leader in the 1000 meter run, will be at the New Balance Games Collegiate Invite on February 6th for what expects to be a loaded field and his best opportunity to chase after a top 25 and 2:30 or faster performance.

Both venues for the Group AAA and Group AA indoor state championships have proved to be worthy of producing all-time best performances in the event as shown with Kostelac's state meet performance last year at the Boo Williams Sportsplex (Group AAA), while both Peter Dorrell and Logan Collins went under 2:30 at Liberty University (Group AA) in 2008.

There is no doubt that the 2010 indoor season when its said and done will require updates on the high school boys 1000 all-time list in Virginia. An updated top 25 all-time list for all indoor championship events (contested at the state meet) will be released at some point this week.
