Albemarle's Madelyn Gypson after her win at Oatlands
There are probably three or four meets in Virginia each year the define the season. The winners of those meets are the biggest of big stars and usually are right up there for state titles. This could be the case following Oatlands this past weekend when Madelyn Gypson burst onto the scene.
Gypson won Oatlands against some of the best competition in the state and ran 19:07 for the win. We estimate this time to be roughly one minute slower than what she could run today if on a flat fast course with better weather.
Madelyn is no stranger to the XC course as she is a senior and has been performing solidly throughout her career. She entered this season having run 18:50 last year at MileStat XC and finishing 4th at XC States. Indoors she won two state titles.
Those accolades are solid but almost pr'ing in those conditions and beating almost every big star in the state is something to hang your hat on. After that performance, Madelyn has moved up to #5 in our subjective rankings.
We are happy for her to have such a break through XC race to be on pace with her progress last year on the track and we are excited to see what is to come the rest of the season.
