Kostelac racing in Millrose Games mile on Friday night

Albemarle senior Anthony Kostelac will be racing Friday night at the historic Millrose Games high school mile in a field featuring 10 of the best milers on the East Coast so far this indoor season. Kostelac was given a rare exemption from having to actually run a mile race prior to Millrose, which is usually necessary in order to be selected for the race. Kostelac is a worthy exemption though as his 4:10.73 performance last year as a runner-up in the Group AAA State Indoor Championships makes him the fastest returning runner in the nation at the 1600 meter distance from the 2009-2010 indoor season.

The Millrose mile race is normally a strategic one as the short 160 meter banked track found at the Madison Square Garden does not regularly produce personal or season best times. With Kostelac possessing one of most feared kicks and finishing speed in the meet (split 1:49 last spring on Albemarle's national record 4x800), the defending Virginia 1000 meter state champion figures to be one of the pre-race favorites. Kostelac will be returning back to New York in the following week to compete in the New Balance Collegiate Games high school 1000 meter race.

The high school boys' mile race is schedule for 9:25 PM on Friday, January 29th.
