Future Stars Spotlight: 10 Freshmen Already Doing Big Things

The indoor season is heating up and so are the performances for these underclassmen stars. Though there are tons of athletes to keep your eyes on, here are 10 freshmen who you really need to watch.

Quincy Gilmer (Nansemond River) Quincy is your freshman state leader in two events. He has run 6.56 in the 55m dash and gone 22-2.5 in the long jump. His combination of speed and jumping while also being at a historically great program means he could be something special.

Whitner Lilly (Douglas Freeman) Lilly had quite the weekend this past Saturday at St. Chris. There he was able to vault 14-6 in the pole vault. His vault ranks 12th overall in the state and leads freshmen vaulters by three feet!

Taryn Patrick (Hermitage) It was a fast weekend for Patrick who blazed a 7.29 at the St. Chris invite. That time is tied for 26th in the entire state and leads all freshmen marks.

John Cody (Nansemond River) This other Nansemond River star leads the state in two events as well for freshmen. He has run 1:06.93 for the 500 and 35.3 for the 300 on a flat track. The state meet should be fun to watch for how fast he really can go.

Juliana Pierce (Charlottesville) Pedigree and your name can only carry you so far, the rest of the distance you gotta prove it. That is exactly what Juliana is doing this indoor season, she's proving it. She has run 5:18 in the 1600 and an insanely quick 3:05 in the 1K. That 1K time leads all freshmen.

Jonathan Grimm (Jamestown) Another XC star who is continuing to run well indoors is Grimm. He has run 9:26.17 for 3200 and 4:19.77 for the 1600. Those times are fast and he could go even faster. Both of those times are freshmen state leading times as well.

Taylor Jenkins (Western Branch) Taylor is already cracking the top 10 in the state, in an event our state is very good at, and she is only a freshman. She leads all freshman and ranks VA #10 in the long jump with her 18-3 season best so far.

Mariah Reed (Christiansburg) Mariah is another one of those XC stars who had a solid XC season but right now it's looking even better for her considering she leads all freshmen in two events indoors! Her 1600 time of 5:06 and 3200 time of 11:14 are leading the state in both.

Massandje Comara (Hermitage) Comara had quite the weekend as well running 1:17.25 in the 500 at St. Chris. This performance leads the state big for all freshmen but was impressive because of how tough she was in the race and the fact that it was run on a flat track.

Cheyanne Mayo (Phoebus) Last but certainly not least, is Cheyanne Mayo. She leads all freshmen in VA and ranks VA #5 in the 55mH with her 8.14 clocking. On top of that mark, she ranks #2 in the 55, #3 in the 300, and #4 in the long jump for freshmen.
