Clarke County's Erin Broy wins the girls developmental 3K race with a time of 12:51.24. Clarke County also takes the boys development race with Ben Veilleux crossing the finish in a time of 10:16.03. Maggie Walker's Abby Thibeault wins the girls junior varsity race with a time of 21:43.49.
Tabb's Ben Mulherin (17:17.89)closes hard to just slip by Fort Defiance's Alex Ott (17:18.14) at the finish. The Tabb bus arrived late forcing the Tabb varsity to run in the JV race. The boys varsity charges down the 400m hill at the start. Already at the front are Albemarle senior Kelly Watt (1), E.C. Glass junior Pat Wilhelm (340) and Culpeper County junior Devin Cornwall (278).
Wilhelm sets a fast pace through the first mile at 4:42 with a trio of Watt, Cornwall and Colonial Forge senior Tony Nowotarski following at 4:45. Saving his energy for the killer two mile hill, 14th ranked Massaponax senior Brandon Dick takes a more conservative approach with a 5:05 opening mile. Also taking the conservative road are Clarke County's Ware Smalley on Dick's right and Simon Biddle-Snead (348) on his left. In front of Dick is eventual 5th place finisher Charles Swartz of Osbourn. Pat Wilhelm heads to the finish line for his first major invitational win with a time of 16:02.83, also a 5K PR for him for a major invite.
Not far behind Wilhelm at 16:13.82 is Culpeper County's Devin Cornwall. Massaponax's Brandon Dick streaks across the finish in a 3rd place time of 16:22.79. Next up is Albemarle senior Kelly Watt with a time of 16:29 and a 5K PR.
Also hitting a new PR is Osbourn senior Charles Swartz with a strong performance of 16:33.79. Clarke County's Simon Biddle-Snead leads finishes 6th with a time of 16:37.89 to lead his team to a 2nd place team finish with 160 points. Finishing ahead of 10 AAA teams, Clarke County sends a strong message to Class A state championship contenders that they are the team to beat. Battlefield's Jason Driscoll and North Stafford's Alec Meyer duke it out to the finish with Driscoll (16:40.39) holding off Meyer (16:40.75) for 7th place.
Colonial Forge junior Nick Oltman (16:44.36) holds off Western ALbemarle's Will Massie (16:44.75) and Fort Defiance's lead runner Derek Hizer (16:45.57) for 9th place. North Stafford's Patrick Quinn (16:49.57) crosses just ahead of a Fort Defiance 3 pack who finish in the 16:51-16:54 range. With their 5th runner coming in at 17:29, Fort Def sent a message to Brentsville, who placed it's top 5 below 17 on the faster Glory Days Grill course today, that the AA championship won't be a cakewalk. The girls varsity charges the downhill start, with freshmen Kelly Reinwald (114) of North Stafford and Kaylan Comer (1020) of Colonial Forge among the early leaders.
Setting about a 5:40 pace through the first mile are Comer and on her left sophomore teammate Molly Hawkins (1028). Freshman Kaylan Comer finishes strong with a major invite win in a time of 19:09. Teammate Molly Hawkins follows in 2nd place with a time of 19:18. This compares with the 1-2 finish times of 18:44/19:16 posted at the Northwestern Region meet by Forest Park teammates Beth Fahey and Stephanie Slekis last year.
Running another excellent performance and finishing strong in 3rd place is Brooke Point Sophomore Brittany Copeland with at time of 19:27. With underclassmen dominating today, North Stafford freshman Kelly Reinwald holds off Maggie Walker's Samantha Dealto for 4th place with a time of 19:36. Maggie Walker's Emily Wauford finishes 6th ahead of Mariah Haggadone of Buffalo Gap.
Rounding out the 3rd top ten finish for the Maggie Walker squad is Ritchie Vaughan, as Maggie Walker (59) ousted Brooke Point (80) and Colonial Forge (88) in team competition. The top finishers in the girls varsity race receive their awards and complimentary gifts.
