SHANNON SAUNDERS 10TH AT PENN STATE WOMEN\'S CROSS COUNTRY MEET
STATE COLLEGE, PA -– James Madison junior Shannon Saunders (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) placed 10th among 345 collegiate runners and led the Dukes to a ninth-place team finish at the Penn State National Women\'s Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning.Saunders completed the 6,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 57 seconds. Her time was nine seconds faster than her previous personal-best clocking of 21:06 in a 6,000-meter cross country race.
Providence senior Kim Smith won the race in 19:46 and led the nationally second-ranked Friars to the team title.
Providence finished with 49 points, and fifth-ranked Duke was second with 60 points. No. 24-ranked West Virginia (194) was third, followed by 29th-ranked Boston College (198), Cornell (210), Penn State (212), 22nd-ranked William and Mary (234), Akron (276), JMU (302) and Wisconsin (351).
There were 41 teams entered in the race.
Other JMU finishers included junior Nelly Anderson (Charlotte, N.C./Cordillera Academy), 34th in 21:53; freshman Michelle Beardmore (Front Royal, Va./Warren County), 55th in 22:20; and junior Tiffany Cross (Rockville, Va./Atlee), 84th in 22:40.
Senior Kelly Baker (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) was 199th in 23:06; senior Cindy Dunham (Warren, Pa./Warren) placed 156th in 23:29; and sophomore Dena Spickard (Marion, Va./Marion) was 166th in 23:43.
HERBERT EIGHTH, DUKES FOURTH AT PENN STATE MEN\'S CROSS COUNTRY MEET
STATE COLLEGE, PA -– James Madison senior Ted Herbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) placed eighth among some 300 collegiate runners and led the Dukes to a fourth-place team finish at the Penn State National Men\'s Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning.Herbert finished the 8,000-meter race in 25 minutes, 47 seconds. Ryan Sheehan, running unattached, won the meet with a time of 25:22. The top collegiate runner was Penn State sophomore Dan Mazzocco with a time of 25:27.
American finished first in the team standings with 49 points and was followed by Penn (83), Penn State (135), JMU (177) and Duquesne (216). The field included 35 collegiate teams and three other teams, and 322 runners completed the race.
