Keino, Fork Union roll on

WOODBERRY FOREST, VA -- Kippy Keino ran unchallenged, and Stewart Ackerly took some challengers down as Fork Union rolled to a fourth consecutive Prep League outdoor track title yesterday at Woodberry Forest.

Keino, a FUMA junior emerging as one of the finest prep distance runners in the country, dropped his personal-best to 4:12.5 for 1,600 meters, winning by more than 13 seconds and moving to No. 3 in the state this spring. Keino came back for a 43-second win in the 3,200, clocking 9:33.70.

Ackerly, a U.Va.-bound senior, led St. Christopher's to a second-place finish with wins in the 400 at 50.30 and 200 at 22.82, both personal-best performances and both No. 2 in the current Richmond-area rankings. Ackerly also anchored the Saints' 1,600 relay to a win at 3:30.5 (area No. 6).

The Saints' Rob Tompkins, sidelined by a stress fracture all spring, won the pole vault at 14-0, tied for the area lead. Seth Lotts gave third-place Collegiate a strong start with a winning heave of 51-8¼ in the shot put (area No. 7), and the Cougars' Peter Farrell took second in both hurdle events, going an area-No. 4 15.26 in the prelims of the 110s.

Henry Hurd of Fork Union won the high hurdles at 14.68, good for No. 9 in the state, and the intermediates at 41.41. FUMA's Brandon Caleb won both horizontal jumps (20-9½ and 43-2½).

Nathan Fritsch of Woodberry Forest, who entered with the No. 2 mark in the state in the high jump (6-8), won his specialty at 6-6. Kent Walls of Virginia Episcopal moved to No. 9 on the state leaderboard in the discus with a winning throw of 150-3.

In the companion League of Independent Schools meet, Katie Doswell won three events to help St. Catherine's overcome Norfolk Academy and five-event winner Sara Rainey.

Doswell, an eighth grader, won the pole vault with a meet-record clearance of 9-0, won the high jump and came from behind to win the 1,600 at 5:14.9, fourth this spring in the Richmond area. Doswell also placed second in the 3,200 and scored in the long jump and triple jump.

Heralded freshman distance runner Ginna Ellis of Norfolk was caught by Doswell on the final straightaway in the 1,600. But Ellis, who entered with the state's No. 6 time at 3,200 meters (11:09.04), pulled away from Doswell in the metric two-miler and won easily at 11:25.5, a meet record.

Ann Tripp of St. Catherine's won the 800 at 2:23.9 (area No. 3) and anchored the winning 3,200 and 1,600 relays. An under-the-weather Danielle Gunnels gave third-place Collegiate a win in the 400, clocking 1:01.41.

Norfolk's Rainey, facing little serious challenge, won both horizontal jumps, both hurdle events and the flat 100.
