Gilliam, who earlier won at 400 meters with a personal-best 50.38, sealed a 4 1/2-point win over Monacan with walk-down anchor leg in the 1,600 relay, the meet\'s final event.
Off the lead by at least 25 meters when he received the baton, Gilliam caught and passed two runners – including Monacan\'s Tyler Hock (51.5 split) at the tape -- with a 48.9-second lap to win the event by .03 seconds at 3:27.53, No. 3 on the Richmond-area performance list this spring.
\"I\'m the last leg, and that\'s what I have to do,\" Gilliam said.
Smith, with wins in the long jump, triple jump and both hurdles events, led the Manchester girls to a 65-point win over James River in second.
L.C. Bird senior Ebonie Jones had a big day in the flat dashes, winning the 100 at 12.48 and 200 at 25.45 -- both area-leading performances.
\"She just decided to get out,\" Bird coach Bob Reed said of Jones, who won the Central Region 200 as a freshman and the region 100 last year.
\"It\'s nice to see her do it again. She\'s back on track.\"
Monacan sophomore Chris Roberson swept the boys hurdles events, clocking personal bests in both at 14.85 (area No. 2) and 39.48 (area No. 4), and also won the triple jump. Classmate Michael James won the 100 at 11.27, No. 2 in the area.
Bird\'s Jim Tiller uncorked an area-best 54-3 1/2 in Tuesday\'s shot put.
Midlothian sophomore Erin Prillaman, the area leader in the girls 800, improved her personal best with a wire-to-wire win at 2:20.85 to highlight an impressive show of force by coach Stan Morgan\'s distance program. Midlothian boys placed 1 through 5 in the 1,600, 1-3-4 in the 800 and 1-2-3-4 in the 3,200.
