On the subject of college running, would someone please explain to me why a chemistry teacher with only about fifteen minutes between school and practice can individualize workouts and a college coach with all day can't?
A big congrats to Deep Creek for hanging on to win the AAA Title. Having attended nearly twenty- five state meets I can tell you that no other team could take so many hits and still be standing. The Hornets are truly champions.
Also, give credit to Vincent Pugh and Coach Rountree who's Lakeland Cavaliers had a seemingly thankless season until the State Meet. With so many State Meet wash outs the Cavaliers just kept hanging in there. This marks the second stop in Coach Pugh's career and the second outstanding program he has produced.
As for Western Branch High School, the Girls' title makes three trips to the winner's circle in the last six years (Boys 97,98), not bad for a school with only an asphalt track. Come on Chesapeake get with the times.
Why is every race a breakthrough race for FUMA's Kippy Keino?
Watch out for September 14th when Alex Tatu and Kippy Keino lock horns again at the FUMA Invitational. Sure would like to see Daniel Kane in the mix as well.
And to all of Alex Tatu's critics ---- lighten up! He is after all, a three time State Champion.
Kudos to all who wrote in about the VHSL format. As a coach at a different level I will state one observation, the season is too long. The public schools could learn from the private schools by ending the season in the middle of May. Eliminating the regionals would be another positive step as so often most programs have their line-up for State already in place. Also, ending the season in mid May would reduce the chances of having such drastic weather. Texas and Florida already do it.
And lastly, as a director of three major meets held here at Fork Union, thanks to every athlete and coach for competing so well here. Let's do it again next year.
