William & Mary Women Prepare for NCAA Southeast Regional

Women's Cross Country Prepares for NCAA Southeast Regional Aims to Return to NCAA Championship 11/11/04 11:45AM WILLIAMSBURG, VA - 2004 CAA Champion William and Mary women's cross country will aim to qualify for the NCAA Championship this Saturday as it contests the NCAA Southeast Regional, hosted by East Carolina in Greenville, NC. The top-two teams from the 6,000m race, held on the Lake Kristi Course, will earn automatic berths to the NCAA Championship. 13 at-large bids will also be rewarded after all the Regional meets are completed and a team's finish at its Regional is crucial in securing an at-large bid. The Southeast Region is one of the deepest and most competitive in the nation and traditionally sends at least two at-large selections to the Championship. The Southeast currently boasts four teams ranked in the latest FinishLynx National poll: No. 5 Duke, No. 8 North Carolina, No. 10 N. C. State and No. 21 Wake Forest. The Tribe has been ranked as high as 22nd this season.

The Tribe is coming into the Regional after capturing second-straight CAA two weeks ago, a feat made more impressive considering the team used the meet to tune-up for the Regional and was not at its optimum level. Senior Jackie Kosakowski (Sauquoit, NY) led the College's effort at the CAA meet with her runner-up showing, one of five All-CAA performers for the squad. The Tribe's talented duo of sophomores Julia Cathcart (Starkville, MS) and Meghan Bishop (Blue Bell, PA) also raced well coming into the Regional, claiming fifth and sixth, respectively, at the CAA Championship for all-conference accolades. Two more All-CAA harriers will form the Regional squad as juniors Kristyn Shiring (Stafford, VA) and Karen Pulliam (North Potomac, MD) finished 11th and 12th, respectively, at the CAA meet. Also with solid CAA finishes were senior Becca Velarde (Albuquerque, NM) and freshman Kaitlin Hurley (Portland, OR) who preserved W&M's one-point victory by racing to 13th and 14th, respectively, ahead of runner-up James Madison's fifth runner.

At 2003's Regional, W&M raced to fifth, its best finish since 1998, but fell short of receiving an at large bid to the NCAA Championship, which it last contested in 2002. Three-time All-American Ali Henderson led the team in seventh place for all-region honors while the squad's top returnee is Bishop, who impressed in her first Regional by claiming 38th.
