Flames Have Solid Showing As Hosts Of Liberty Record Bash

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Liberty Men's and Women's Track teams had a strong day in hosting the first-ever Liberty Record Bash at the Tolsma Track Center on Saturday.

Highlighting the day for Liberty were performances by Kena Butts and Josh McDougal. Butts (Jr., Voorhees, N.J.) set a Big South record for the women's high jump clearing 1.80 meters (5' 10 ¾") and provisionally qualified for nationals. It was the ninth top performance in the country in the event this season. Meanwhile on the men's side, McDougal (Fr., Peru, N.Y.), running in his first indoor meet of the season, was a provisional qualifier in the 3000 meter run and set a Big South record with a time of 8:01.78.

On the day, the Lady Flames had four individual event winners. Besides Butts, other winners included Arlene Zelinskas (Fr., Dayton, Ohio) who qualified for the ECAC/IC4A Indoor Championships by winning the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.84, Aimee Riley (Sr., Black Mountain, N.C.) who won the pole vault by clearing 3.30 meters (10' 10"), and Caitlyn Sutterfield (Fr., Murfreesboro, Tenn.) who won the shot put with a throw of 12.45 meter (40' 10"). In addition, the Liberty team of Aniska Strachan (Sr., Freeport, Bahamas), Danielle McNaney (Sr., Gardner, Kan.), Butts, and Mynique Robinson (Sr., Philadelphia) took the women's 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:01.84.

On the men's side, the Flames had eight individual event winners. Along with McDougal, Alonzo Phillips (Fr., Vero Beach, Fla.) claimed the 200 meter run with a time of 22.36, Dan Rabe (Jr., Monaco, Pa.) ran a 4:19.08 to win the 1 mile run, Travis Campbell (Jr., Candler, N.C.) topped the 800 meter run field with a time of 1:57.15, and David Hunt (Fr.) won the 5000 meter run with a time of 16:06.53. In the field events, Larry Evans (Jr., Dumfries, Va.) cleared 2.03 meters (6' 8") to win the high jump, while Andy Musser (Sr., Bowmansdale, Pa.) was a dual winner, taking the shot put with a toss of 15.22 meters (49' 11") and the weight throw with throw of 15.80 meters (51' 10"). The Liberty team of Josh Gilreath (Fr., Reidsville, N.C.), Campbell, Phillips, and Brandon Hoskins (Fr., Garden City, Texas) captured the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:21.26.

Besides host Liberty, teams from Virginia, Lynchburg College, Eastern Mennonite, Bridgewater, and Richmond all had members in the first-ever Liberty Record Bash.

Both men's and women's teams are in action again next weekend at the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg, Va. The event is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, February 11.
