Preview: Thursday's events at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina will include two freshmen events and many emerging elite divisions with the only championship event in the 5000 meter run. The top athlete from Virginia in the 5000 meter run and likely only runner from the state with serious All-American aspirations will be Group AAA 3200 meter state champion Katherine Walker (pictured left by John Herzog). The Brooke Point senior ran a personal best of 10:30 for 3200 meters in her state meet victory and while look to make a significant drop on her 18:06 5K PR from the cross country to wrap up her high school career.
In the freshmen races, Skyline's Thomas Madden ranks among the top 10 ninth graders in the country with his 1600 meter PR of 4:23.62. Only two of those ranked ahead of him in the US will be racing against him in the freshmen mile in Greensboro with 4:18 1600 meter runners Sam Prakel of Ohio and Trevor Gilley of Texas. Locking up with Prakely and Gilley will be Madden's opportunity to end his first year of high school with a sub 4:20 mile and potential at a national title. Midlothian freshmen Sean Willard won this event at the indoor national meet in Boston, but is not competing while Chantilly's Sean McGorty earned All-American honors with a top 6 finish in that race and will be racing in Greensboro.
Notable names competing in Thursday's emerging elite division of the field events including Group AAA state indoor pole vault champion Eric Zwarcyz of Mills Godwin, Group AA state outdoor discus runner-up Jon Billings of Fauquier, Group AA girls pole vault state champion Justine Dutton of Caroline and runner-up Nicole Harding of Western Albemarle.
