Baxter qualified for his second event when he placed fourth among 46 entries in the mile. He turned in a time of four minutes and 14.13 seconds, finishing behind three runners from Virginia, including winner Cory Duquette (4:09.51). The IC4A standard is 4:14.40. Baxter qualified for the 1,000 two weeks ago when he emerged fifth on the Dukes' all-time chart at 2:25.93.
Cawley will return as a competitor in the 500-meter run after turning in a second-place showing with a time of 1:04.91. Stanley Lagrenade of Georgetown won the 14-man race in 1:03.91. Cawley finished sixth in the event at the 2004 IC4A Championships.
The Dukes' distance medley relay improved upon its previous IC4A qualifying time, placing third in 10:11.07. Baxter and Cawley were joined on the unit by sophomore Peter Novick (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) and senior Evan Kays (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft).
Junior Allen Carr (Yorktown, Va./York) had a noteworthy race in the 1,000, clocking in at 2:30.68 for a fourth-place finish among 29 runners.
JMU will next compete on Feb. 19 in the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax. The IC4A Championships are slated for March 4-6 in Boston.
