Virginia Tech Men Finish 6th, Women Take 9th at ACC Indoor Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Virginia Tech\'s track & field teams completed their first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference indoor championships today at the Eddie Smith Field House on the campus of North Carolina. Tech\'s men\'s team finished in sixth place out of the 11 conference teams with 43.50 points while the Hokie women grabbed ninth with 36.50 points at the championships.

Virginia Tech\'s fourth-year head coach stated, \"The highlight of today was Erin Mahony placing third in the pole vault and the women\'s 4x400m relay team finished sixth in a tough race. Overall I think we had a solid performances which made a successful meet. We had three conference champions and a couple of top 10 finishes. We will be looking forward for the conference outdoor championship at Florida State in a couple of months.\"

Today\'s action included, Ryan Norwood (Sr., Cheyenne, Wyo.) recording his fourth NCAA provisional qualifying mark of the season in the shot put. His mark of 59\'11\" (18.26m) place him third out of the 13 thrower-field. Norwood earned six team points for Tech\'s men\'s team. Sven Hahn (Jr., Stuttgart, Germany) finished right behind Norwood in fourth place, picking up five team points. Hahn threw his sixth NCAA provisional mark of the season with 59\'6.75\" (18.15m). Steve Huntzinger (So., Fair fax, Va.) and William Collins (Jr., Chesterfield, Va.) took ninth and 11th places, respectively. Vikas Gowda (North Carolina) won the men\'s shot put ACC title with his NCAA automatic throw of 64\'3.75\" (19.60m).

Erin Mahony (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) tied with Tatyana Kirichenko (North Carolina) for third place in the women\'s pole vault with a height of 11\'9.75\" (3.60m). Both ladies picked up 5.50 points for their third place finish. Mahony\'s teammate Abbey McGrath (So., Burke, Va.) cleared 11\'3.75\" (3.45m), which placed her tied for 10th overall. Lacy Janson (Florida State) cleared 12\'7.50\" (3.85m) to become the ACC champion.

Tech\'s women\'s 4x400-meter relay team of Marie Giles (Sr., Hampton, Va.), Victoria Green (Jr, Chesapeake, Va.), Britni Spruill (Fr., Hampton, Va.) and Jackie Nicholson (Sr., Clayton, N.J.) ran the event in 3:48.76 for sixth place overall and three team points. Miami won the ACC title in the 4x4 with its NCAA provisional time of 3:39.21.

Tamara Burns (Jr.-Tr., Elm Creek, Neb.) finished seventh in the women\'s shot put with a mark of 44\'11.50\" (13.70m), which gave Tech\'s women\'s team two team points. Kimberli Barrett (Miami), the ACC women\'s shot put champion, threw an NCAA automatic mark of 59\'8.25\" (18.19m) to win the event.

Anthony Jenkins (Sr., Baltimore, Md.), Jason Fludd (Sr., Stafford, Va.), Matt Renninger (Jr., Barto, Pa.) and Jordan Price (Fr., Newport New, Va.) ran in the men\'s 4x400-meter relay for Tech and finished in eighth place with 3:23.55. Florida State ran the relay in 3:14.07 for first place and the ACC title.

Jason Fludd (Sr., Stafford, Va.) finished 10th in the men\'s triple jump with a mark of 46\'7.25\" (14.20m). Idikoro Eradiri (So., Ashburn, Va.) jumped 46\'0.75\" (14.04m) for 11th place in the event. Rafeeq Curry (Florida State) jumped an NCAA provisional mark of 52\'4.75\" (15.97m) to win the ACC men\'s triple jump title.

Tina Tremmel (Jr., Dossenhem, Germany) ran the women\'s 3,000 meter in 10:06.53 for 19th out of the 31 runner-field. Shannon Rowbury (Duke) won the event in an NCAA provisional time of 9:20.47 to become the ACC champion.

In the men\'s 3,000 meters, Rider Clauss (Fr., Madison, Wis.) finished first for Tech in a time of 8:57.36 for 36th place while teammate Bryan McVey (Fr., Arlington Hts., Ill.) took 41st place.

Next up for six Hokie tracksters, four men and two women, is the NCAA Championship held at Arkansas on Mar. 11-12.
