Boys Athlete of the Week: John Crews

John Crews (pictured in blue jersey from Foot Locker 2001) returned to the place that made him breakthrough as one of the state\'s top distance runners two years as he returned to Hokie town to compete in the Virginia Tech Invitational this past Saturday. Crews broke the course record there that year with a time of 15:24 for the 5K course as he beat some of the state\'s top harriers. This year\'s meet was held at the same place, but a slighlty different course, by 400 meters as the race was run at an unusual 4600 meters. While Crews old record was thrown out of the record books with the new course, that did not deter Crews from a setting one on the new course as he won the race by a huge margin with his time of 14:24 (converts roughly to a 15:45 5K) to earn him athlete of the week honors. Crews will have plenty of competition to push him this weekend at Great American in Charlotte, North Carolina where familiar state rival Alex Tatu of Thomas Dale and national caliber runners such as Chris Solinsky of Wisconsin and Matt Debole of North Carolina are also scheduled to run in the Seeded Invitational division with Crews.
