Winning the Coach of The Year Award for the 2025-2026 indoor track season is Nansemond River's Marco McKoy.
Coach McKoy's Warriors were hands down the team to beat indoors. His girls would go on to dominate the Class 5 state meet scoring 113 points. His boys, pictured above, finished in a close second place despite an untimely illness affecting their scoring potential.
Coaching at a high level is difficult in multiple fronts. The first being that track & field is both an individual and team sport. To balance that Coach McKoy had to seek out good competition and meets throughout the season to run or jump impressive marks while also keeping his core healthy and hungry for the state meet.
That leads us to the other side of things, focusing on how to score at the state meet. This is an area many coaches have to focus on and is their own March Madness. You have to guesstimate what other teams will do and how you can try to respond. This was particularly hard in the Class 5 boys competition which had numerous serious contenders. For Nansemond River to finish second without one of their top scorers is quite impressive and shows that coaching is more than just putting together workouts.
Coach McKoy leaves the season with two state meet trophies and numerous athletes and relay teams now holding state records and all-time top 10 spots.
Each year this award goes to the coach who did the best job coaching no matter if they were the head coach or an assistant coach. Once a coach wins this award they are ineligible to win it again or in a different season. Below you can see some of the names he is joining.
