Spyridon Jullien Breaks the ACC Hammer Throw Record

Jullien currently is the No. 1 men\'s hammer throw athlete in the nation

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Virginia Tech\'s Spyridon Jullien broke the Atlantic Coast Conference hammer throw overall record at the Charlotte Invitational on Saturday which was held at the Irwin Belk Track & Field facility.

Greg Jack, Tech\'s associate head men\'s track & field coach, stated, \"I am happy for all of Spyridon\'s accomplishments. This one is huge because not every day an ACC track & field record gets broken. The last time an athlete broke an ACC outdoor record was in 2002. Up until this past weekend there were only two current athletes from the conference to hold an ACC outdoor overall record and their records were set in 2000 and 2002.\"

Jullien (Jr., Athens, Greece) threw the hammer in an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 228\'9\" (69.73m) to break the four-year conference overall record by more than 20 feet at the Charlotte Invitational this past weekend. The previous hammer throw ACC record of 208\'1\" (63.42m) was set by Isaiah Oglesby (NC State) in 2001.

Jullien is no stranger to breaking Oglesby\'s conference records. Jullien broke Oglesby\'s 2001 35 lb. weight throw ACC championship record on February 17 when he took the conference title with a throw of 75\'9.50\" (23.10m).

Jullien\'s hammer throw mark of 228\'9\" (69.73m) currently leads the NCAA Division I by more than eight feet.
