Hokies Go the Distance at Duke

Tech runners post school season best times in the distance events

DURHAM, N.C. - Virginia Tech\'s distance runners competed at the Duke Invitational held at the Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C. this weekend.

On Friday, Heather Mullis (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) placed 25th out of the 77 runner-field in the 400 meters with a time of 59.41 while Meredith Brooks (So., Burke, Va.) finished in 29th place in the race with 59.55.

Natalie Sherbak (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) ran the 1,500 meters seeded race in a new school season best time of 4:33.29 for 22nd place out of the 49 competitor-field. Teammate Jessica Fanning (Fr., Charlottesville, Va.) took 41st place in the race with her time of 4:41.51.

Kristin Hart (Fr., Herndon, Va.) was the first Hokie to cross the finish line in the 1,500 meters unseeded race in sixth place with a time of 4:43.57. In the same race, Samantha Ference (So., Clifton, Va.) clocked the seventh best time out of the 82 runners with 4:43.93.

In the 5,000 meters with 89 runners in the race, Katie Danyko (Jr., Sterling Hts., Mich.) had personal season best time of 18:23.98 for 48th place and Jenn Dietz (So., Springfield, Va.) was the 56th finisher with 18:31.61.

For the Hokie men, Billy Berlin (Fr., Midlothian, Va.) grabbed 18th place out of the 51 runner-field in the 1,500 meters seeded race with a school season best time of 3:53.43. David Atkiss (Sr., Hatfield, Pa.) ran the race in 3:54.42 for 21st place and Brian Markley (So., Lovettesville, Va.) was 35th.

Kyle Guglielmo (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) ran in the 1,500 meters unseeded race and placed third out of the 88 competitor-field with his time of 3:56.61. Duncan Vick (So, Richmond, Va.) had a time of 3:57.28 for fifth place, Bryan McVey (Fr., Arlington Hts., Ill.) took 13th place and Zach Thomas (Fr., Sewickley, Pa.) was the 34th finisher in the race.

Rider Clauss (Fr., Madison, Wis.) finished in 25th place with a time of 14:53.74 in the 5,000 meters which had 137 runners. Andrew Montgomery (Fr., Falls Church, Va.) came in 34th place with 14:59.12, Dan Forgeng (Fr., Hatboro, Pa.) took 38th place and Christian Barlow (So., Springfield, Pa.) was the 86th finisher in the race.

In today\'s action, Heather Mullis finished in 22nd place out of the 81 runner-field in the 800 meters unseeded race with her time of 2:22.22.

Kristin Hart ran the 3,000 meters in 10:27.18 for a 26th place showing.

Matt Miller (Fr., Harrisonburg, Va.) had a 19th place finish in the 800 meters (unseeded) with a school season best of 1:55.70. Chris O\'Keefe (Fr., Vienna, Va.) grabbed 29th place with a time of 1:56.66 and Kyle Guglielmo was 48th in the 130 competitor-field.

For the 3,000 meters, David Atkiss clocked the 12th best time of the race, 8:28.50. Zach Thomas claimed 23rd place with 8:41.44 and Bryan McVey finished a second behind Thomas for 25th place.

The Hokies next competition is Tennessee\'s Sea Ray Relays on April 15 through 16 in Knoxville.
