Maroons Have Five Athletes Win Events at Division I Elon Meet, Withers Places in Three Events
ELON, NC --The Roanoke College outdoor track & field team had five different athletes win events at the Division I Elon University in Elon, NC on Saturday afternoon, with freshman Casandra Williams highlighting the performances with two school-record break performances. Junior Kristen Lovell also set a new school record in the women's hammer throw.In the women's 200 meter race, Williams placed first overall with a time of 25.95 seconds. That mark broke the old school record in the vent by 0.08 seconds. Williams also broke the school's outdoor record in the 100 meter dash, placing second overall in the event in 12.55 seconds. That time broke the old record of 12.61 seconds. Senior Alexis Thompson finished second in the 200 meter race and fourth in the 100 meters on Saturday.
In the women's hammer throw, Lovell broke her own school record with a final throw of 121' 1". She broke her own record by five inches. She was second in Saturday's event. Also on the women's side, freshman Meredith Withers won the high jump with a meet-best 5' 2". She was also third in the 100 meter hurdles (15.96).
For the Maroon men, junior Dana Mueller was the meet's champion in the 400 meter race, finishing in 50.09 seconds. Jason Turbyfill was just behind in 51.52 which was good enough for second place. Maroon freshman Coleman Abbott won the men's 1,500 meter race in 4:12.98, beating his closest competitor by four seconds. Freshman TJ Milewski also claimed an individual title, winning the men's 400 meter hurdle race in 1:01.17.
Other top Maroon performances on Saturday included Kat Martin's 2:31.13 in the women's 800 meter race (second place), Withers' third place finish in the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.37), the women's 4x100 meter relay team's second place finish, Alexis Thompson's third place result in the triple jump (32' 8.5"), and Lovell's second place in the discus. She finished the meet with a 123' 2" performance in the event.
Katie Suehs was fourth in the discus and third in the hammer for the Maroon women, while on the track Turbyfill was second in the 200 meters. Russell Wesh was third in the triple jump, while Brian Huff and Bobby Hoffert were 5-6 in the discus. Jared Egger took second in the javelin with Huff finishing two spots behind.
