Lynchburg Sweeps ODAC Outdoor Track and Field Titles

Lynchburg College won by large margins in both the men's and women's competitions in capturing the 2005 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday in Harrisonburg, Va.

The Hornets were the defending champion in both the men's and women's events and also captured the 2004-05 ODAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in both. In the men's events, Lynchburg accumulated 212 points, followed by Eastern Mennonite with 117, Bridgewater College with 98, Washington and Lee University with 47, Roanoke College also with 47, and Virginia Wesleyan with five. In the women's events, LC recorded 169 points, followed by RC with 120, EMU with 91, BC with 74, W&L with 67, and VWC with two.

Lynchburg senior Ashley Palmer was named the Female Athlete of the Meet and Female Athlete of the Year after placing in the top five in eight events and winning four. She set a new ODAC championship record in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:05.93. She won the 400-meter dash in 59:39 seconds and the long jump in 5.24 meters. Palmer placed second in the javelin with a throw of 29.17 meters, third in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.67 seconds, and tied for third in the high jump with a height of 1.58 meters. She was also fifth in the 200-meter dash in 28.09 seconds. Finally, she combined with Siobhan Budine, sophomore Amanda Diver, and sophomore Sarah Bunderburke to set an ODAC record in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:05.94.

Washington and Lee senior Nathan Johnson earned Male Athlete of the Meet honors after pulling off the double win in the 1500-meter and 5000-meter runs. He ran the 1500-meter in 4:04.20 and the 5000-meter in 15:47.60. He was also named the ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Roanoke's Dana Mueller took home ODAC Male Athlete of the Year accolades. He won the 800-meter run in 1:53.57 and captured fifth in the 1500-meter run in 4:10.50.

Freshman of the Year honors went to Brian Viar of Lynchburg and Meredith Withers of Roanoke. Viar won the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.54 seconds, placed second in both the high jump at 1.87 meters and the long jump at 6.70 meters and finished fourth in the triple jump at 13.19 meters. Withers won the 100-meter intermediate hurdles in 16.11 seconds, finished third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.53, tied for third in the high jump at 1.58 meters, and ended up fifth in the shot put with a throw of 9.87 meters.

Three other awards were handed out with two going to head coach Jack Toms of Lynchburg for his teams ODAC Championships. The final award for ODAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year went to EMU senior Wendy Driver. She won the triple jump with a leap of 11.47 meters and placed third in the long jump at 5.19 meters.

Several other athletes established records at the meet. Bridgewater senior Ricky Easterling broke the ODAC and EMU facility records with a leap of 2.14 meters in the high jump. Lynchburg senor Will Carpenter set an ODAC record with a throw of 45.39 meters in the hammer throw. Washington and Lee freshman Lindsay Erickson shattered the ODAC and EMU facility records in the 5000-meter run with a time of 18:33.50. Finally, Bridgewater freshman April Miller set an ODAC and EMU facility record with a toss of 40.66 meters in the hammer throw.
