Abingdon boys & Graves continue SW VA dominance, Blackburg girls top Cave Spring again

CHRISTIANSBURG, VA -- Abingdon sophomore Griff Graves continued his streak of victories in Southwest Virginia as he notched another victory over Christiansburg senior John Horst. Running in his third race in eight days, Graves beat Horst by 14 seconds on Horst\'s home course at the Blue Demon Invitational with a winning time of 16:08. The time broke the old 5K course record held by Horst at 16:19. Graves seems to be a similar trek as Fleet Hower was on in 2001 when Hower earned All-American honors with a 11th place finish at Foot Locker Nationals. Hower won the Blue Demon Invite in 2001 with a 16:20 clocking.

The Abingdon boys as a team were also winners at Christiansburg as they won by a 7 point margin over Cave Spring (73 pts) with a 66 point team total. Abingdon had top 15 finishers from Graves, Nathan McMurray (4th, 17:20), and Tanner Cummings (14th, 17:55). Alex Carmack was just outside of the top 15 for Abingdon in 18th place with a time of 18:03. The Abingdon boys will need better performances out of their fifth runner Will Hiltebeital (34th, 18:30) if they expect to be competitive at the state meet with the Region II squads such as defending champs Brentsville and a strong Region I team this fall in Jamestown.

The Blacksburg girls (66 pts) took it to the Cave Spring girls (73 pts) for the second week in a row. The Cave Spring girls had looked better on paper based off of personal bests going into the season, but the Blacksburg girls have been the better team thus far this fall. Ariel Burbey was the top finisher for Blacksburg in third place with a time of 19:47. Teammate Allison Homwer was not too far behind in fifth at 19:57, while Laurel MacMillan (11th, 20:50) had a solid run to finish in the top 15 for the squad. Hannah Barrow (23rd, 21:58) and Casey Carroll (24th, 22:02) were the next two Blacksburg finishers to complete the team scoring.

Transfer Rachel Travitz led the Cave Spring girls with a 10th place finishing effort of 20:32. Laurel Sitze (13th, 21:05), Dana Orr (14th, 21:07), Allison Crawford (17th, 21:24), and Nikki Harvey (19th, 21:38) rounded out the Lady Knight\'s front five. The Cave Spring girls will need to run stronger up front in order to change the team outcome as Blacksburg was able to put almost three runners ahead of Cave Spring\'s top runner Travitz.

The top two finishers in the girls\' race reigned from Group A schools as Craig County\'s Lori Crotts took the individual title in a 19:32 clocking while Mariah Hagadone finished as race runner-up in a time of 19:43.
