Providence, RI -- Virginia Intermont College's Fernando Cabada finished
fourth at the USA 5k National Championship held at the CVS/Pharmacy
Downtown 5k in Providence, Rhode Island today. Cabada's high finish and
his time of 14:08 will likely qualify him for the US national team that
will compete at the North American 5k Championships in Chula Vista,
Ca., on October 23rd. The three-man national team will be selected from
the top five finishers in today's race and will face teams from Canada
and Mexico.
Cabada finished behind Olympians Adam Goucher (13:47), Anthony Famiglietti (13:49) and Ryan Shay (13:57), while topping a deep field of America's best runners including former world and current American marathon record holder Kahlid Khannouchi.
Cabada, a senior on VIC's track team who finished his collegiate cross country eligibility last year while helping Intermont win the NAIA national title, passed up the fourth place prize money of $1500 in order to retain his amateur status. The Fresno, Ca. native will be looking forward to closing out his collegiate career when the NAIA National Outdoor Championships are held in Fresno next May.
