Over the past decade there have been a few stars in Virginia to say the least. This new group of athletes, especially these two freshmen, are going to make a case for G.O.A.T status.
These two superstar freshmen are Imani Moore (Varina) and Steffon Lyon (The St. James Academy).
Up first is Imani Moore. Imani ranks VA #2 in the 100 at 11.51, VA #1 in the 200 at 23.73, VA #4 in the 400 at 55.04, and VA #2 in the long jump at 20-4.75.
On top of those amazing times, she also wins when it matters. Despite only being a freshman, she has tallied up three state titles already from indoors where she won the Class 4 Long Jump, 55, and 300m Dashes. The record for is 11 individual state titles indoors and 9 outdoors. She is certainly on pace to come close, if not past those records.
What also helps her is coming through the system right after Brianna Selby (Indian River) and with Sophie Rambo (Grassfield) who are state record holders and national champions. They blazed the trail for this new group of athletes and it's looking like Imani is trying her best to run with it from there.
On the boys side we have national champion and national class record holder Steffon Lyon who as just a freshman has already broken 21 indoors in the 200 and is close to breaking Noah Lyles' indoor state record.
Just like Moore, he is fortunate to be where he is, when he is. The team at The St. James Academy is perfect for him to grow and better himself with tough competition up and down. Right now even, his own teammate, David Nnabuko leads the entire state in the 200 at 20.90.
Lyon is also accompanied by one of the best relay teams in state history which has helped balance his work load this year. That is exactly what we love to see with a young star so that by the time he is a senior he is setting records every time he steps on the track.
Simply put people, the future is here!
