Kiara Porter was tired of finishing second. The Tabb High star was runner up in the quarter mile her sophomore and junior year, but got serious her senior season. She started training back in October and November and hasn't stopped yet. That dedication has propelled Porter to a new level, state champion.
"I have to attribute my success to my outside of school training as well as my school training, and my maturity. I buckled down and focused on my mission which was to PR every time I stepped on the track."

Heading into the indoor season Porter did a lot of endurance work. The senior and her Tabb teammates spent countless hours running the hills of Yorktown. Those workouts would help her later in the season against rivals Alyn Carr of Blacksburg during her indoor campaign and Ronnie Powell of Southampton during outdoor.
