NEW KENT, VA -- The New Kent boys and girls both won Region A team titles comfortably and have high hopes of state titles next weekend.
The New Kent boys, paced by sophomore Cameron Cox's 3rd place finish of 17:06, fit 5 runners in the top 10 for a total score of 33 points.
The New Kent girls were even more impressive as they took the first 3 places with Eileen Wicker (1st, 21:30), Emily Wheeler (2nd, 21:56), and Sarah Davis (3rd, 22:03). The New Kent girls finished with 21 points, which put them well ahead of second place King William with 55 points.
Mathews senior William James had a runaway victory in the boys' race as he set a course record for the New Kent High School 5K course with his time of 16:44. James will be on the favorites to win the state title next weekend at the A State Meet.
