Asia Washington added to a stellar recruiting class
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech track and field program has
announced the signing of Asia Washington to a National Letter of Intent for
the 2006-07 year.
Washington, a Piscataway, N.J., native, is one of the top 400- and
800-meter runners in the nation. She was the runner-up at the New Jersey
group IV State Championships in the 800m with a personal-best time of
2:12.01. She also took third in the 400m at the meet. Washington\'s top
time of 55.56 in the 400m came at the New Jersey Meet of Champions. Her
Piscataway High School 4x400m relay time was among the top 15 in the
nation with a time of 3:48.
Washington was selected Athlete of the Year in 2005 by the Piscataway
Star Ledger and Courier News. She is a National Honor Roll student and
is ranked in the top five percent of her class.
\"Asia is one of the most talented 400/800m runners I have seen at the
high school level,\" Dave Cianelli, Director of Track and Field said.
\"She will have an immediate impact for us at the conference level and will
develop into a national level athlete in Coach Lawrence Johnson\'s
(Tech\'s sprint, hurdle, jumps coach) program.\"
Washington is the daughter of Alvin and Tia Washington of Piscataway,
N.J., and picked Virginia Tech over Maryland, Rutgers, Connecticut and
Seton Hall.
