Virginia Boys Cross Country Performer of the Week (Sep. 7-13)

After another week of cross country racing in Virginia, it's time to vote for the MileSplit Virginia boys cross country performer of the week.

This Week's Nominees:

Rivers Matthews, Blacksburg High School (Virginia): Covered 5K in 14:57.60 to win the Knights Crossing XC Invitational by 16.8 seconds over a field of 898 finishers. The time slots in at No. 4 of 4,106 athletes in MileSplit's database at Green Hill Park since 2019, and it came 21.5 seconds faster than the prior mark on this course.

Hayes Buppert, Tandem Friends School (Virginia): The 5K clock read 15:50.50 when the race was decided at the Pole Green XC Classic, good for first out of 530 finishers and a 16.6-second gap back to second place. That time slots in at No. 19 of 3,796 athletes in MileSplit's database at Pole Green Park since 2019.

Gavin Daniels, Gainesville High School (Virginia): A 5K victory at CRD #2 at Patriot HS came in 16:45.00, well clear of a 130-runner field by 97.0 seconds at the line. The clocking ranks No. 3 of 143 athletes in MileSplit's database at Patriot High School since 2025, and it improves a prior mark of 19:49.53 on this course by 184.5 seconds.

Jason Day, Bishop Ireton (Virginia): First place at the StallionsXC Invitational came via a 5K time of 16:01.02, with 95 finishers trailing by as much as 15.6 seconds at the front. The run sits No. 4 of 572 athletes in MileSplit's database at Willowmere Park since 2021.

Gabriel Everett, Western Branch High School (Virginia): Out of 80 runners at the Southeastern District Meet # 1, one crossed first in a 5K time of 16:49.20, building a 65.1-second cushion by the finish. That effort ranks No. 77 of 2,708 athletes in MileSplit's database at Bells Mill Park since 2019.

Caleb Greer, Smithfield (Virginia): Just 7.6 seconds separated first place from the chase pack at the Ham City Hustle Invitational, where the winning 5K time of 16:27.10 topped a 115-runner field. The mark ranks No. 22 of 1,069 athletes in MileSplit's database at Windsor Castle Park since 2019.

Bryce Winston, Patrick Henry (Ashland) (Virginia): Claimed the win at The Steward School Invitational #1 in 18:27.80, distancing a 54-runner field by 71.1 seconds. That time sits No. 2 of 163 athletes in MileSplit's database at Deep Run Park 5K Course since 2025.

Colton Blakenship, Wise Central High School (Virginia): A time of 16:59.20 in the 5K was enough to win Bearcat Crossing outright, finishing first among 61 runners with a 42.3-second margin to spare. The performance ranks No. 11 of 150 athletes in MileSplit's database at Sugar Hollow Park 3 Mile Course since 2021.

Thomas Fulcher, Bassett (Virginia): Held on for a narrow win at the Bengal Clash at the River, covering 5K in 16:59.36 to edge the runner-up by just 2.4 seconds among 141 finishers. The time ranks No. 25 of 955 athletes in MileSplit's database at Smith River Sports Complex since 2019.

Bryce Goodale, Poquoson (Virginia): The Woodside XC Invitational produced a first-place 5K finish in 17:42.70, 86.6 seconds ahead of the next-closest runner among 30 finishers. That clocking stands No. 103 of 1,630 athletes in MileSplit's database at Newport News Park since 2019, a 292.2-second improvement on this course from a previous time of 22:34.90.
