41 points was the magic number for both Blacksburg boys and girls to open their 2011 cross country season with team titles at Hidden Valley's Clash with the Titans. Each squad had worth challengers, but four boys and five girls in the top 15 individual places proved Blacksburg to have superior depth to the rest of competition on Saturday. One of the few remaining members of Hidden Valley's back-to-back Group AA state champion squads, Carolyn Bethel appears to be stepping up in her junior year as she won on her home course in a time of 20:13. Blacksburg's Nick Link led the Blacksburg boys to a team title, but not before running off course for roughly 100 meters and then being caught at the end by David Barney (16:50) of E.C.
