Kolonich leads Team VA at Battle of the Potomac

Robert E. Lee sophomore Bailey Kolonich lead the Team Virginia girls to another title at the Battle of the Potomac this past Saturday in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Kolonich finished 13th for All-State honors at last week's VHSL State Championships and came back the following Saturday to win the Border War race between Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia in a time of 19:56. Next top finishers from Virginia were West Springfield's Maddie Wittich (4th, 20:20) and West Potomac's Sophia Passacantando (6th, 20:45), while collectively the Virginia girls won 89-121 over the Maryland girls.

Meanwhile, the Maryland boys dominated the Virginia boys who were led by two star sophomores in Louis Colson (2nd, 16:45) of Thomas Edison and Haben Zemichael (4th, 16:59) of Battlefield. Zemichael was one of the state's top freshmen last year in cross country, while Colson emerged during the track season including a sub 9:20 All-State 3200 meter performance.
