Men place 14th and the women 25th
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The men\'s and women\'s Virginia Tech track and field teams had a great showing at the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend, with both finishing in the top 25. Each team had two student-athletes score at the competition.
The men\'s team tallied 15 points in its 14th-place finish, which is the best indoor finish in school history. Senior Spyridon Jullien captured 10 of the points when he successfully defended his national championship in the weight throw with a school-record mark of 23.73m (77\'10.25\"). The throw was also the fourth best in NCAA history.
Freshman Mohsen Anani earned All-America honors with his fourth-place effort in the weight throw, earning five points for the Hokies. Anani was just off his personal-best throw at the meet, finishing with a best of 22.82m (74\'10.50).
Arkansas won the men\'s crown with 53 points. LSU was second with 45 points while fellow ACC member Florida State finished third with 41 points. Maryland and North Carolina tied for 41st with four points apiece. Clemson was the other ACC team to score, earning 0.33 points to tie for 65th.
The women\'s team placed 25th out of the 63 teams that scored, which is the best finish during the indoor season in school history. The Hokies totaled nine points at the meet. Senior Saskia Treisscheijn accounted for six of them with her third-place performance in the pentathlon. Triesscheijn totaled 4,224 points, shattering the school record that she previously held with 4,058 points.
Senior Tamara Burns was sixth in the weight throw with an effort of 20.55m (67\'5.25\"). With the throw, she earned All-America honors and three points for Tech.
Texas won the women\'s title with 51 points. Stanford finished second with 36, Arizona State third with 30, North Carolina was fourth with 29 and Miami was fifth with 27 points. Florida State was the third ACC team, finishing with 16 points while Maryland was just ahead of Virginia Tech with 11 points for 22nd place. Duke and Georgia Tech tied at 26th with eight points. Virginia was 48th with three points while NC State rounded out the ACC teams with one point to tie for 58th.
