Katie Doswell of St. Catherine\'s and Kristy Tobin of Great Bridge went to war on their anchor legs of the 4x800 meter relay on Friday evening as Tobin took the baton just ahead of Doswell. The AAA 1600 meter state champion Tobin was able to hold off the Nike Indoor Nationals 800 meter champion Doswell with a 2:13 split to the St. Catherine\'s senior\'s 2:12 split. Only three tenths of a second separated Great Bridge (9:40.63) and St. Catherine\'s (9:40.93) at the finish. On Saturday, Tobin would win the 1600 meter run in a 5:13.63 effort and then take second to Doswell with a time of 2:20.49 as Doswell posted one of the state\'s fastest times in a 2:15.99 win.
Tobin\'s teammate Janet Brown was dominant at CNU in the field events as she won three events in the AAA division and finished second in another as she finished first in the long jump (18\'0\"), triple jump (37\'4\"), shot put (37\'0\"), and second in the discus (105\'9\").
The Deep Creek girls ruled the hurdle events as Chantil Harvey (15.31) and Nikki Luedeke (16.01) finished 1-2 in the 100 meter hurdles, while Luedeke came back to also take top honors with a 47.45 clocking. Deep Creek also was victorious in the 4x100 meter relay (49.62) and had the top finisher in the 200 meter dash with Ashley May having the best time at 26.81.
However, Great Bridge (111 pts) had too much firepower between Brown and Tobin for Deep Creek (106 pts) to overcome as five points separated the two teams in the final team standings.
Matoaca\'s Shanneka Claiborne posted her second fastest time ever in the 100 meter dash with a 12.09 win in the event on Saturday.
Wet conditions affected many of the field events as was shown in Claiborne\'s teammate Mia Aghaji defeating state champion and national runner-up high jumper Ashley Gatling of Deep Creek as both athletes cleared a 5\'6\" height in the event.
Despite the meet missing several of the Eastern Region\'s top 400 meter sprinters, Oscar Smith\'s Crystal Rascoe posted a swift time of 57.24 to win the event.
A duel between two of the Eastern Region\'s better distance runners occured in the 3200 meter run with Gloucester\'s Emily Webb (11:37.63) defeating defending outdoor regional champion Katherine Telfeyan (11:44.97).
Both AAA divisions of the 4x800 meter relay saw close finishes as in the boys race Bethel anchor leg Daniel Cummings held on for the win for the Bruins with their 8:20.64 win over Eastern Region rival Hickory (8:21.01).
Hickory\'s Kevin Nichols, who was a part of that exciting high jump competition at the Group AAA State Indoor Meet this past March, came out on top at CNU as he cleared 6\'6\" with Petersburg\'s Douglas Walls in a close second at 6\'5\".
Walls had the best mark of the meet in the long jump as his leap of 21\'1\" was one inch better than Matoaca\'s Bryant Terry (21\'0\"). Bryant\'s teammate Aramis Massenburg had a similar result in finishing one inch behind Kempsville\'s Davon Smith (43\'1\") in the triple jump comepetition with a mark of 43\'0\".
However, the Matoaca stars got redemption with wins on the track as Terry won the 400 meter dash with an early season sub 50 clocking of 49.58 and Massenburg bested the field in the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 14.77. Their performances helped Matoaca win the AAA division as their 74 points put them comfortable ahead of Oscar Smith with 54 points.
Ervin Riddick led second-place Oscar Smith with a 22.58 win as well as being a member of the first place 4x100 meter relay (43.41).
One of the performances of the meet on the boys\' side came from Greenbriar Christian\'s Trevor Bray as he had exceptional day with a personal best toss of 56\'1\" to have the top mark of the meet in the shot put.
Great Bridge\'s Jon Lockhart had the most convincing win of the meet as his best throw of 155\'5\" in the discus placed him well ahead of second place Jaymes Brooks of Denbigh (131\'1\").
