Webb starts indoor season off with a 9:06 3200

NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- The Christopher Newport University High School showcase held on January 12-13th at the brand new Freeman Center in Newport News, Virgina, featured some of the best times and performances so far in this indoor track season, showing that this new facility is arguebably one of the fastest indoor tracks in the state.

This meet also featured the return of South Lakes's Alan Webb who had been absent from the indoor track scene up and until this point. On Friday night, Webb anchored his 4x800 meter relay team to a win with a 1:54 leg. Then the following day, he came back to win the 3200 in a remarkable time of 9:06. His 9:06 is currently right now the fastest high school boys' 3200 meter time so far this year. Webb shot out from the start like a cannonball. His first 200 was in 30, 800 mark he was around 2:10, at the mile mark he was at 4:22. It looked as though he was on pace to break 9, but he slowed down significantly the last mile and ran that in 4:44. While all of the spectators attention was focused on Webb, Ocean Lakes junior Matt Keally was a huge surpise when he came across the line 12 seconds later in a new PR of 9:18.

In the team race, the Atlee boys got major contributions from sprinter Brian Ford who won the 300 in a state best time of 34.95 and he also anchored his team's 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay teams to victories. On the girls side, Bethel easily won the meet, racking up 106 points. They were led by Ara Townes who won the 55 meter dash (7.12) and long jump (17'04.75").
