Group AA All-State distance runner and VA #14 pre-season ranked David Taylor of Western Albemarle High School recalls his very first high school cross country race:
"My first high school race was the Ragged Mountain Cup in 2009. I ran a time of 11:00 placing twelve. I remember being super nervous at the line and almost forgetting to start, then going out too fast. During the race I remember trying to stick with Adam Visokay and his long hair. He out kicked me in the last three hundred meters. After the race I was super excited even though I had no idea what I was doing. I wasn't nearly as excited as my brother was after the race, once he finished he started screaming at me to finish strong."
