5/5-5/6 Weekend Meet Summaries

CAROLINE INVITATIONAL - Sha\'Tia Hart of Courtland had double wins in the jumps with a 17\'7\" long jump and 35\'10\" in the triple, while Courtland swept the sprint relays in the 4x100 (49.07), 4x200 (1:43.60), and 4x400 (3:58.32) meter relays as the Group AA school took the team title with 78 points. James Monroe\'s Marie Fields had two impressive runs in the 200 meter dash (25.10) and 400 meter dash (57.84). Colonial Forge dominated the girls distance events as they took the 4x800 in a time of 9:43.33, while Molly Hawkins won the 1600 (5:23.30) and Kaylan Comer won the 3200 (11:29.84). Huguenot looked strong on the boys side as the team winners with 85 points as they won two relay events in the 4x100 (42.55), 4x200 (1:30.28), and 4x800 (8:12.23) meter relays. Matu Bundy also took the 400 meter dash (50.15) and Robert Evans won the 300 meter hurdles (40.58) for them individually. Staffod\'s Matt Cash had a PR run to win the 800 meter run convincingly in 1:56.34, while Colonial Forge swept the top two places in the 3200 meter run with Dan Leyh (9:35.24) and Nick Oltman (9:43.51). Group A was well represented by the Middlesex with sprints with Jerry Jones running away with the 100 meter dash win in a 10.85 clocking, while teammate James Harris was a 22.55 winner in the 200 meter dash. Caroline\'s Jamal Sullivan performed well in his home meet by finishing first in both the long jump (22\'8\") and triple jump (43\'9\"). Group AA state indoor champion Robert Synder cleared a height of 6\'5\" to win the high jump.


DRAPER INVITATIONAL - Herndon boys and girls both finished second at the Draper Invitational as Ermin Mujezinovic\'s 9:34.22 3200 meter win on day one of competition and Abe Dagnachew\'s second place run of 1:56.44 were two of the better performances of the meet from Virginians. Episcopal\'s William Braswell won the 100 meter dash in a 11.28 clocking and Paul VI\'s Abby Clement was the winner in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:20.60.


FIVE FORKS TRACK CLASSIC - Colonial Heights sophomore Shae Wilbon was dominant in the sprints at Prince George as won all three individual sprint events in the 100 (12.53), 200 (25.53), and an impressive 57 flat clocking in the 400 meter dash. Maggie Walkers Samantha Blankenship made a nice return from injury with a 10 foot clearance to win the pole vault. Teammates Natalie Davis in the 800 meter run (2:22.42) and Susannah Piersol in the 3200 meter run (11:58.74) were also winners at Five Forks. Manchester\'s Anthony Chesson rolled to wins in the 100 and 200 meter dashes with swift clockings of 10.93 and 21.88 in those events. Teammate Antonio Miller leaped to a mark of 46\'1\" to win the triple jump. Atlee swept the top three places in the pole vault with Jordan Cole leading the Raider charge at a height of 14\'6\".


FLUVANNA INVITATIONAL -- Held Friday evening at Fluvanna County High School, the meet featured some of the state\'s best athletes including Angela Jenkins of Buffalo Gap, Ashley Early of Western Albemarle, and Deangelo Wilson of Prince Edward County. Jenkins won three events on the day as she posted a time of 26.61 on the track in the 200 meter dash and ran on the first place 4x100 meter relay (51.19), while taking her specialty events in the long jump (17\'10\") and triple jump (36\'5\"). The state of Virginia is getting spoiled with Ashley Early\'s constant clearances of 12 feet and may be missing her next year when we are back to girls clearing \"just\" over 11 feet as she won the pole vault at Fluvanna at a height of 12\'6\". Fluvanna\'s Roshell Hill, fresh off her Dogwood win in the discus, swept both throwing events with a mark of 35\'0\" in the shot put and 111\'5\" in the discus throw. Buffalo Gap\'s Mariah Hagadone had the top distance performance of the day among the girls with her two wins in the 1600 (5:13.15) and 800 (2:19.87) meter races as she along with Jenkins and two other teammates helped little Group A school Buffalo Gap win the team title convincingly. Prince Edward County\'s Deangel Wilson ran away with the sprint events with top times of 11.09 in the 100 and 22.06 in the 200 meter dashes as being featured on the winning 4x100 meter relay (51.12). Jamie Reichlen continued to have an excellent racing this season this spring for Fork Union with a 1:58.37 win in the 800 meter run. Jeremy Haney won one for the home team Fluvanna in the 1600 meter run with his time of 4:33.09. Monacan had an impressive showing in the 3200 meter run for the boys with the top 3 finishes all finishing virtually together with Ryan Beville (1st, 9:50.85), Brett Hammonds (2nd, 9:51.28), and Andy Cutler (4th, 9:51.61). With the help of the sweep in the 3200 meter run, the Monacan boys were the team champions in one of their rare invitational appearances this season.


GAR-FIELD INVITATIONAL - Potomac Senior boys and Osbourn Park girls were the team winners at the Gar-Field Invite. The Osbourn Park girls broke two meet records in the sprint relays with a 49.15 clocking in the 4x100 and a final time of 3:56.22 in the 4x400. The Hyter twins led them once again with Bethany Hyter winning the 400 meter dash in a classy time of 56.32, while sister Brittany was the 300 meter hurdle winner at 45.77. The Wesftield girls were a distance second as they were led by their distance group. Tasia Potasinski of Westfield took the 1600 meter run in a narrow and exciting win over Woodbridge freshmen Michelle Britto (5:10.07) in 5:09.96. Westfield teammate Kerry Hartman was an easy winner in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:16.56 with teammate Brittany Sevachko in second at 2:23.20. Wins in the 4x100 (43.48) and 4x400 (3:27.46) helped carry the Potomac boys to the team title. Chris Harrison was also a member of those two relays as well as the first place finisher in the 400 meter dash with a 49.09 clocking. The Stonewall Jackson sprinters were impressive with Thelma Breezealt on the girls\' side and Jared Simmons and Damien Thigpen on the boys. Breezeatl took wins in the girls 100 (12.16) and 200 (24.94) meter dashes, while Jared Simmons posted the top time in the 100 meter dash (10.91) and team member Damien Thigpen (22.47) ran just faster than Simmons (22.58) in the 200 meter dash to give them a 1-2 finish in the event. The Brentsville duo of Adam Henken and Nick Gehslen seem to be inseperable in races all season and the 1600 at Gar-Field was no exception with Henken winning in 4:25.57 and Gehlsen in second at 4:28.25. The girls triple jump saw two of the best go at it with Hayfield\'s Nakeisha Wineglass and Hermitage\'s Queen Harrison as Wineglass came out on top at a mark of 38\'7.50\". However, Harrison won two events in the day in the long jump (17\'10\") and 100 meter hurdles (14.54). Liberty\'s Carly Morse nearly won both throwing events on the day, but Woodbridge\'s Arienne Jenkins prevented that by bettering her by a few inches in the shot put at 39\'4.50\" with Morse second in the shot put (39\'1.75\") and first in the discus throw (121\'6\"). Langley\'s Jordan Calderwood swept the hurdles with a 15.37 clocking in the 110 and 41.61 clocking in the 300 meter hurdles. Forest Park\'s Zach Williams won a fiercely contested boys 800 meter run in a time of 1:56.40 with three other runners following on his heels. Turner Ashby\'s Chrissy Rhodes had a big day in the pole vault as she improved her best best height by a full foot in a 10\'9\" clearance win.


LANDSTOWN INVITATIONAL -- The Great Bridge boys and girls looked impressive as post-season competition nears at the twilight Landstown Invitational in Virginia Beach. Mike Morrison bounced back from a no height performance on a windy day at Penn Relays to win the pole vault at Landstown with a successful clearance at 17\'0.25\". Morrison also split a 48 second leg on the 4x400 meter relay as Great Bridge suddenly appears to have relay squad that could pick up considerable points at states with a winning time of 3:19.97 at Landstown. Bayside\'s Charles Clark was pushed to the line in the 400 meter dash by Ryan Sykes of Great Bridge (49.47), but still won in a time of 49.30. Great Bridge also had a sub 50 time out of freshmen Micah Moyer at 49.94. VMI bound Austin Lester also had a good day in throws winning the discus competition with a best mark of 157\'5\" and taking second in the shot put (51\'0\") to Jaymes Brooks of Denbigh (52\'3\"). The Heritage boys also had a strong showing with Keith Brown taking the 800 meter run in a time of 1:57.68, while teammate Cameron Pannell swept the hurdles with times of 15.35 in the 110 and 39.28 in the 300 meter hurdles. William & Mary bound Courtland Marriner also notched two wins a piece on the track in the well as he flew in the sprints with clockings of 10.65 and 21.70 in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Kellam possesses one of the top freshmen milers in the state in Bobby Peavey as he won the 1600 meter event at Landstown in a personal best time of 4:34.88. While youth was served in one event, speed ruled in the 3200 meter run as Eddie Judge made the jump from his regular event of the 1600 meter run and won as he pulled away from Landstown\'s Jonathan Bunker (9:55.42) on the final lap with a winning time of 9:50.73. The Great Bridge girls also looked tough as their male counterparts did with Janet Brown winning two events and placing second in another, while Kristy Tobin doubled in the distance events with two wins. Brown had the best jump in both the long jump (18\'7\") and triple jump (37\'8\"), while finishing second in both the shot put (36\'11\") and discus throw (106\'6\"). Tobin faced off with Eastern Region rival Kenya Jones in the 1600 meter run as Jones made the move up from her traditional 800 meter event and it was a great battle with Tobin winning in a time of 5:06.94 and Jones finishing second in 5:08.97. With limited rest for her next event, Tobin rallied late to seize first place from Cox\'s Jennifer White (2nd, 2:18.11) in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:17.15. Jones along with fellow distance standout Callen Powers were members of the Western Branch 4x800 meter relay as they posted a solid solo time of 9:48.03. Great Bridge will need more points outside of Tobin and Brown though if they expect to take the state title at states and 3200 meter runner Katherine Telfeyan may provide the points they need as she won at Landstown in a time of 11:35.69. Crystal Roscoe had an outstanding meet for oscar Smith as she won the 200 meter dash in 25.63 and also anchored her 4x400 meter relay team to a season best time of 3:57.17. Faith Brock won for the home crowd in the 400 meter dash in a time of 59.69, while also being a part of the winning 4x100 meter relay just moments earlier in a time of 48.12. Landstown\'s second event winner of the day came from Whitney Etheridge in the shot put (38\'6\"). While Janet Brown prevented Heritage\'s Carolyn Lewis from picking up the other wins she may have liked to have in the jumps, she did tie a personal best height of 10\'6\" in the pole vault. Heritage teammate Ruth Hunt posted a swift time of 12.33 in the 100 meter dash. Denbigh had two individual event winners between Candace Shoates in the 100 meter hurdles (15.97) and Lakeisha Carney in the discus (117\'4\").


LOUISA LAST CHANCE INVITATIONAL - A Friday evening meet hosted by Louisa County saw some fine times and marks turned in by the athletes competing. Culpeper County\'s Kamerra Brown took two events in the sprints with a 12.77 clocking in the 100 and 27.24 clocking in the 200 meter dash. Homestanding Louisa County had Tanisha Jenkins, Kedric Barber, and Todd Shelton as their winning representatives. Jenkins finished first in both the 100 meter hurdles (15.64) and triple jump (36\'5\"), while taking second in the long jump (17\'0\") to Albemarle\'s Ashley Harris (17\'2\"). Meanwhile, Barber had the top time in the 100 meter dash at a time of 11.22 and Shelton\'s best toss of 153\'3\" won the discus throw competition. Culpeper had a second two event winner in Jeff Ferris as he swept the hurdles in clockings of 15.16 in the 110 and 40.53 in the 300 meter hurdles. There were some exciting races in the distance events, especially for the boys. Battlefield\'s Jason Driscoll and Culpeper\'s Devin Cornwall battled it out in the 1600 meter run with Driscoll as the eventual winner at 4:23.14 and Cornwall in second at 4:25.34. Driscoll came back later to finish fourth in the 3200 meter run in a time of 9:50.74 as only five seconds separated the top four finishers with Alec Meyer of North Stafford crossing the line first in a time of 9:45.54 and Spotswood\'s Bobby Heitz (9:46.94) and teammate Pat Quinn (9:48.64) trailing in close behind in second and third. Broadway\'s Margaret Richards went well under 12 minutes in her 11:42.74 win in the 3200 meter run. Harrisonburg (74 pts) won the girls\' team title by a narrow as you can get one point margin over district rival Spotswood (73 pts). Sarah Hamilton led the Blue Streaks by winning both the shot put (35\'8.50\") and discus throw (120\'3\"). Spotswood\'s top individual performance of the day came from Christen Showker posting a personal best time of 47.84 to win the 300 meter hurdles. Culpeper won the boys title behind Ferris and Cornwall. Cornwall later won the 800 meter run after finishing second in the 1600 meter run.


NIKE SPRING INVITATIONAL - The first year meet held at Oakton High School saw many great performances. While a meet filled with predominantly Northern Region talent, the two athletes who stole the show reigned from the Central Region in Hermitage senior Alex Bowman and Midlothian junior M.C. Miller. As the anchor leg for the Hermitage 4x800 meter relay, Bowman took the baton with the running clock showing 6:06. When he crossed the line. The running clock showed 7:58. How did he do that? By covering two laps and 800 meters in 1 minute and 52 seconds. Bowman followed up that impressive split with a win in the 800 meter run as he crossed the line first there as well with a time of 1:54.95. Meanwhile, Miller joined a very select few of Virginian girls that have ran under five minutes this spring in the 1600 meter run. In a select few that means 800 meter national champion Katie Doswell and two mile national runner-up Catherine White. Miller ran away from a strong field at Oakton to win in a personal best time of 4:58.92. Not too long after, Miller came back for her second victory of the day in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:17.83. West Springfield junior Mike Spooner took the 1600 meter run in a time of 4:20.67, while Jason Witt of Midlothian doubled back from finishing eighth in a deep 1600 to win the 3200 meter run in a time of 9:40.23. The James Robinson and Thomas Edison boys fittingly tied for the boys team title with Devan Clark and Ed Baldwin leading Edison out of the field events with Clark taking two wins in the throws (50\'5.25\" SP/161\'11\" D) and Baldwin picking up two first places himself in the jumps (22\'5.50\" LJ/ 44\'0.50\" TJ). James Robinson\'s points were spread out among first place finishes in Thomas Barrineau in the high jump (6\'4\"), AC Meyers in the 110 meter hurdles (15.50), Maurice Thompson in the 100 meter dash (11.44), and the 4x400 meter relay (3:27.19) at the end of the meet. The girls saw a great team battle with the national powerhouse Eleanor Roosevelt squad (128 pts) from Maryland and Lake Braddock (124 pts) as only four points ended up separating them in the end. Lake Braddock was led by Anna Noguchi\'s two wins in the field events with a 10\'3\" clearance in the pole vault and mark of 17\'1\" in the long jump. Melanie Akwule also picked up considerable points for the Lady Bruins with a win in the 100 meter hurdles (15.27), fourth place finish in the 300 meter hurdles (46.80), and third place finish in the triple jump (34\'8\"). Mount Vernon\'s Assante Williams was a double event winner in the field events in high jump (5\'4\") and triple jump (35\'9.50\"). Lake Braddock had the top two places in the shot put with Teressa McCoy (41\'6.75\") and Allison Jones (37\'11.25\"). Erin Klein in the 1600 meter run (3rd, 5:06.11), Michelle Presley in the 800 meter run (2nd, 2:18.42), and Anna Corrigan in the 3200 meter run (2nd, 11:31.68) led the Braddock distance crew. Lachelle Wallace of South Lakes prevented Eleanor Roosevelt from taking nearly every sprint event with a 12.74 clocking in the 100 meter dash.


SUFFOLK INVITATIONAL - Many of the state\'s best athletes were in attendance at the Suffolk Invitational. The boys jumps were graced by two of the best in Corey Vinston and Marlon Woods. In the triple jump, Vinston leaped to a state leading mark of 49\'3.50\" to beat the former state best of 48 feet held by Woods. Meanwhile, Woods took the long jump in a personal best mark of 23\'10\". The two future teammates at Norfolk State University then faced off in the high jump where Vinston had the better day winning at a height of 6\'8\" with Woods in second at 6\'6\". Woods placed second to Vinston as well in the triple jump with a mark of 45\'9\". Vinston also had an outstanding day on the track as he posted a swift time of 10.74 in a win in the 100 meter dash. Vinston then ran another best time in the 400 meter dash at 48.59, yet the time placed him third as Quentin Moore of Deep Creek scorched a 47.44 state best time to win with Indian River\'s Thomas Speller (48.46) catching Vinston right at the line. Speller would also later win the 200 meter dash in a classy time of 21.89. Granby\'s 3-time 110 meter hurdle state champion and Penn State bound football player Chris Bell made a rare competition appearance as he won the 110 meter hurdle event in a time of 14.57. Salem\'s Jahmal Potter, who competed in the 400 meter hurdles at Penn Relays last week, had an easier going with the competition at Suffolk in the 300 meter hurdles with a solid 38.98 win. Deep Creek boys took the 4x100 meter relay with a quick time of 42.97. The boys throwing events were loaded with many of the top tier big guys in the state as Woodside\'s Ryan Gordon beat them all with best throws of 57\'7\" in the shot and 152\'10\" in the discus to come away with two meet records. Booker T. Washington (98.2 pts) won the boys team title as Woods was the main contributer of points, but had help elsewhere including a 4x800 meter relay win and first place from Demarion Ellis in the he 800 meter run in a time of 1:59.29. While the Deep Creek boys finished second to Booker T. Washington, the role was reversed with the girls as the Deep Creek girls (157.5 pts) finished 33 points ahead of second place Booker T. Washington (122.5 pts). The Deep Creek girls were led by Chantil Harvey, who won two events in the long jump (18\'3.50\") and 100 meter hurdles (15.13), while taking second in the triple jump (36\'11.75\"). Deep Creek swept the hurdles with Chantal Luedeke also finishing first in the 300 meter hurdles in a time of 47.17. with Ashley Gatling sit out this weekend, it was teammate Jonee Artis\' turn to shine as she took the high jump at a clearance of 5\'4\". Bayside\'s Amanda Oliveira had an excellent day in the pole vault to clear a height of 10\'6\", while teammate Mary Kownack was an individual winner as well in the 800 meter run (2:27.14). Woodside\'s Dominique Jordan looked impressive in two victories in the 400 (55.64) and 200 (24.85) meter dashes. Salem went 1-2 in the 100 meter dash with Shamika Kentish clocking a time of 12.37 in first and Teinesha Mitchell in second at 12.52. Kentish (25.75) finished second to Jordan in the 200 meter dash. Danielle Drummer was Booker T. Washington\'s lone individual event winner in the triple jump with a mark of 37\'4.25\", but the team had the winning 4x800 meter relay, while finishing second in both the 4x100 (50.19) and 4x400 (4:05.61) meter relays. Deep Creek was able to pick up additionals points in the shot put with Tiphani Harris (35\'10\") and Jasmin Walton (35\'5.50\") posting the two best throws, while also closing out with a win in the 4x400 meter relay (4:01.79).
