Capital District XC Championships
Wednesday, October 24th @ Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, VA
Results: Varsity Boys - Varsity Girls - JV Boys - JV Girls
Meet Summary: Defending Central Region cross country champion Nathaniel Hall looked sharp in winning the Capital District title with a 16:04 performance at Pole Green Park. The Atlee junior Hall finished 17 seconds ahead of another junior in Paul Adam (16:21) of Lee-Davis, who was followed in next by teammate Grayson Morgan (3rd, 16:51). Despite having two of the top three finishers, Lee-Davis (54 pts) was unable to seriously challenge Atlee (35 pts) who were boosted by the late season return of All-State middle distance track runner Griffin Carmichael (5th, 16:58) to claim the team title.
Glen Allen's Katie Sperry became her school's first district champion in cross country and it was a decisive first for Sperry and the Glen Allen program. Sperry crossed the line in 19:19 at Pole Green, which put her 26 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher in Atlee sophomore Chloe Bavin (2nd, 19:45). Sperry qualified for the state cross country meet last fall by taking the 15th and final individual spot at the Central Region Meet, but will look to finish much higher next Saturday at Pole Green. The Atlee girls were dominant in tallying a low team score of 29 points after taking 6 of the top 11 places.

Beach District XC Championships
Wednesday, October 17th @ Virginia Beach Sportsplex (5K) in Virginia Beach, VA
Meet Summary: The streak of Beach District titles was extended to 7 straight for the Ocean Lakes boys and 8 straight for the Ocean Lakes girls on October 17th at the Sportsplex in Virginia Beach. The Ocean Lakes girls had to overcome a lot this season and prior to the season with transfers, graduations, and injuries, but still found themselves in the end as the Beach District's best. Last year's AAA state cross country runner-up Nikki Park of Lcean Lakes is starting to peak at the right time again as she was able to defeat First Colonial's Morgan Anderson who has been running consistently well as one of the Eastern Region's best this fall. Park won in a season best 5K time of 18:39, while Anderson (2nd, 18:48) and Kellam's Abby Motley (3rd, 18:51) both were able to dip under 19 minutes to round out the top three. Behind Park, Ocean Lakes then inserted four more runners among the top 5 in Olivia Bethune (4th, 19:20), Erica Jackson (5th, 20:00), Allison Magnant (6th, 20:05), and Nicole Clanton (10th, 20:28) to win easily with their team score of 26 points putting them well ahead of the runners-up from Princess Anne with 79 points.
Kellam seniors Billy Boros and David Gregory rolled out front and found each other at the end in the finish line together as the Beach District's top two runners with Boros winning in a time of 16:28 and his training partner Gregory not far behind in second at 16:35. Boros will be one of the top contenders for the Eastern Region title next week. Cox High School has a potential future regional champion in freshmen Jonathan Lomogda, who finished third in his first high school district championship meet with a time of 16:44. Another freshmen from Princess Anne in Harrison Martingayle was only 15 seconds behind Lomogda in sixth place.
The Ocean Lakes boys averaged 17:12 as a squad with two under 17 minutes in juniors Daniel Read (4th, 16:55) and John Will (5th, 16:56) breaking into the top 5. Their top five spread was a mere 36 seconds from 16:55 to 17:31 to help them compile a winning team score of 49 points. Led by the freshmen Lomogda, the Cox boys (2nd, 65 pts) were able to pull ahead in second over the Boros and Gregory tandem led Kellam squad. (3rd, 73 pts).

Eastern District XC Championships
Wednesday, October 24th @ Churchland High School (5K) in Portsmouth, VA
Meet Summary: The Eastern District may be the weakest Group AAA district in cross country, but it does not make the least competitive. That was certainly the case in the boys' team standings at the Eastern District Championships in Portsmouth on Wednesday with Granby winning by a mere point with their score of 43 points over two squads tied at 44 points between Maury and Churchland before the sixth runner tiebreaker went to Maury for them to become district runners-up. Only two points away from a district team title, the Churchland boys at least got a consolation prize in having the individual district champion as Deandre James won the district race by 10 seconds over Maury's Andrew Madison with a time of 17:51 on his school's home 5K course.
There was not much drama in announcing the girls' team champion in the Eastern District with a 30 point cushion for the Maury girls (1st, 30 pts) on the runners-up from Woodrow Wilson (2nd, 60 pts). Maury had a well packed top four with only 43 seconds separating their first four scorers taking places fourth, sixth, seventh, and eighth. Individually, the district title came down to two runners in the end between Booker T. Washington's Jessica Davis (1st, 20:56) outkicking Granby's Brooke Adams (2nd, 20:56) for the victory as both runners went under 21 minutes.

Concorde District XC Championships Wednesday, October 24th @ Burke Lake Park (2.98 miles) in Burke, VA
Meet Summary: Despite missing one of their top five runners in Peter Malander, the VA #1 ranked Chantilly boys did not seem to be missing a beat as they put up a silly low team score of 19 points in traditionally one of more competitive districts in the state for cross country. Despite having only his teammates as his top competition, nationally ranked harrier Sean McGorty did not hold back in moving himself up the Burke Lake Park (2.98 miles) all-time list. McGorty ran 14:42 in last year's Northern Region Meet to insert him into the top 10 and now finds himself tied #6 all-time with his old rival Ahmed Bile after a 14:38 performance on Wednesday at the Concorde District Championships. McGorty has not let off the pedal all-season long setting meet and course records often and the returning Foot Locker All-American is putting together one of the best seasons in recent history by a Virginian. It be fair to say that not since Bobby Lockhart and Alan Webb over 10 years ago that a Virginian has been so dominant over the course of a cross country season.
His teammates were not letting up or showing mercy on their overmatched district opponents by placing five runners among the top 7 and all under 15:50 with McGorty, Logan Miller (2nd, 15:38), Faris Sakallah (4th, 15:45), Adam Huff (5th, 15:46), and Ryan McGorty (7th, 15:48). If they can get Malander back for regionals and states, Chantilly could be even more dominant but they have shown by beating arguably the second best team in their region, James Robinson, by a wide margin 19-64, that they should be just fine without him.
James Robinson received a boost to their lineup in the return of their early season #1/2 runner Nathan Schulte after missing much of the season due to injury. Schulte was their team's fifth finisher at districts in 17th place at 16:22, but should get in better shape each week to help their team's chances of competing for a state meet berth and state podium finish. Robinson will need their pack to move up though as only John Tolbert ran under 16 minutes on the short Burke Lake Park course in 6th place at 15:47, but have great depth as shown with Leif Van Acker as the team's seventh finisher in 23rd place at 16:34.
Westfield (3rd, 92 pts)and Oakton (4th, 95 pts) rounded out the top four advancing teams for the boys, which are two squads who could very well end up in the top four at the regional meet as well. Herndon's Bradley Heuer ran a solid race to break up a top four sweep of Chantilly runners with his third place effort of 15:40.

Macey Schweikert and the James Robinson girls gave Allie Klimkiewicz and the VA #2 ranked Oakton girls all they could handle, but Klimkiewicz and her team did enough to repel any upset plans coming to reality. Klimkiewicz and Schweikert were able to separate from the rest of the field including sub 5 minute miler Kendall Cowne (3rd, 17:57), but it was not until the final 50 meters that Klimkiewicz was able to shake off Schweikert to repeat as a two-time district champion as a sophomore in 17:36, while Schweikert just on her heels at 17:37. It was the same finish in last year's district meet with Klimkiewicz as the winner at 17:44 and Schweikert as the runner-up at 17:47.
Klimkiewicz's teammate Hailey Dougherty appears to be making her late season push again after last fall being a somewhat surprising All-State cross country finisher. Dougherty edged out Robinson's Lauren Berman for fourth with both runners timed at 18:22. Despite losing the head-to-head kicks between each team's top two runners, Robinson actually had the highly ranked Oakton squad beat through four runners with Ruth Briggs (7th, 18:44) and Mary Katherine Mastele (8th, 18:55) running under 19 minutes and ahead of Oakton's #3. However, Oakton's superior depth then made up the difference by placing their entire top 7 ahead of James Robinson's #5 to come out as district champions by 5 points with a score of 40 points compared to Robinson's 45 points.
Westfield has a bright freshmen star in the making in Sarah Freix, who finished 6th behind five All-State potential caliber runners with a performance of 18:34. Chantilly girls are hoping to join the Chantilly boys as a state team qualifier next week at the Northern Region Championships, but are likely going to need a better showing than at their third place showing (72 pts) at their district meet considering some of the other contending squads from other districts.
