Vince Bradford Relays 2012

Matthew Zajac of E.C. Glass is throwing for some of the best marks in state history for an underclassmen in the discus throw. Recently at the Bradford Relays, Zajac threw for a season best mark of 171'1" which was not far off his remarkable freshmen year best of 174'11". Zajac is following in the footsteps of his older brother Michael Zajac who was a state champion thrower at Glass and went onto a successful collegiate career at South Carolina. Matthew Zajac won his first of potentially four state titles in the discus as a freshmen, which was a rare feat in itself much less his attempt of winning four consecutive titles.    Other top performances at the Bradford Relays came predominantly in the field events as well including a sweep of the triple jump by Charlottesville athletes David Johnson (46'8.75") and Christen Edwards (37'0.25"), a 40 plus foot throw mustered by Heritage's Lillie Reid in the shot put, and a 14'6" personal best clearance from Ken Ritchey of Jefferson Forest in the pole vault.   Best time on the track came from a quartet of Blacksburg boys distance runners challenging a sub 18 minute time in the 4x1600 meter relay with a near 4:30 per leg average with their final time of 18:02.70. The multi-versatile Erika Jackson of E.C. Glass kept her focus narrowed on the hurdles this weekend, which paid off with two W's in the 100 (15.86) and 300 (48.36) meter hurdles. Glass teammate Zakiya Bateman has a sub 12 second hand-time in the 100 meter dash from this spring and is working to legitimate that performance with an FAT time similar following a 12.34 clocking at the Bradford Relays over AA indoor 55 meter champ Latrice Morris of Heritage. With their 3:25.85 victory in the 4x400, the Liberty Christian Academy boys kept E.C. Glass from completely dominating the sprint relays as the Hilltoppers rolled out swift times in the 4x100 (43.10) and 4x200 (1:30.62) meter relays.
