Now thats how you throw a discus! Natalie Baird (Park View) US #6 159'4" NEW AA State Meet Record & VA #2 All-Time! Erik Kuster (Liberty-Bedford) 179-0 NEW AA State Meet Record Photos by Joe Showker At the VHSL Group AA State Championships at Harrisonburg High School this weekend, some monster marks were put in the discus throw by Park View junior Natalie Baird and Liberty (Bedford) senior Erik Kuster. Baird finally got her big throw in this season in the discus that she had been waiting for and with perfect timing at the state championships as she shattered her own meet record from last year by nearly seven feet with the nation's sixth best mark at 159'4". She now edges herself ever so closer to the state record of 159'9" set in 1981 by Jackie Wallace of Lafayette. Meanwhile, VMI recruit Kuster improved by nearly a full ten feet off his previous state #2 mark in the discus throw with a mark of 179'0" to break one of the oldest AA state meet records as the old mark of 177'5" was set in 1977. 15 STATE TITLES FOR CATHERINE WHITE! Photo by David Fleenor Meanwhile, Northside senior Catherine White made history by winning all three distance races for the second year in a row and concluding what will be known as legendary high school career by raising her total of state titles in cross country indoor, and outdoor track to an amazing number of 15. Peter Dorrell of Blacksburg will look to attempt to do as White did next year with a second straight triple as the junior won the 3200 (9:10.47) and 1600 (4:15.22) meter races convincingly, but it took a photo finish to determine Dorrell as the winner in his final race in the 800 meter run against Heritage's Nick McLaughlin as both were timed in a virtually dead heat at 1:54.40. It was a very tight team battle for the boys with Harrisonburg (46 pts) winning the AA state title by two points over Brunswick Senior (44 pts), while Park View (51 pts) fed off of Baird's wins in the shot put and discus to put 16 points between themselves and runners-up Charlottesville (35 pts). The VHSL State Championships are upon this weekend with all three classifications contesting their championship meets in different corners of the state with the AAA State Championships at Todd Stadium in Newport News, AA State Championships at Harrisonburg High School in Harrisonburg, and the A State Championships at Radford University in Radford. MileStat.com will have in-depth coverage of all three championships with photos and videos from the AAA and AA State championships and photos from the A State Championships. Pre-meet coverage will include meet previews, athlete spotlights, rankings, and other features. Click for more... Pictured above by John Herzog: Hampton senior Tierra Brown cooked her preliminary race in the 300 meter hurdles at Todd Stadium on Friday evening with a then US #1 time of 41.62! Brown moved ahead of Tennessee's Jackie Coward, who held the nation's fastest time of 41.66 since the Arcadia Invitational (California) in April. After getting the US #1 time under her belt in her final state meet, she had her eyes on meet records for Saturday including the 100 meter hurdles meet record of 13.81, which was set in 1988 by Lisa Wells of Manor. Brown clocked in at 13.73 in Saturday's finals to win her second state title in the event and then came back later to win her third title in four years in the 300 meter hurdles. The usually all-business on the track Brown showed her smiling face on several occasions including above with her new 100 meter hurdle meet record as well as for a MileStat.com post-300 hurdles finals audio interview.. Saturday Highlights: Deep Creek program becomes the first since 1983 in AAA to win both the boys (57 pts) and girls (46 pts) outdoor team titles. They were both pushed to the state titles to the final event as second place finishers Landstown girls (43 pts) and Western Branch boys (55 pts) kept it close by claiming the 4x400 meter relay titles to make things interesting at the end. The story of the meet was the youth with large group of underclassmen playing a large role in their team's success as well as more than a handful of individual champions. Sophomore boys champions include Matthew Armentrout of Deep Run in the pole vault (15'0"), Damien Thigpen of Stonewall Jackson in the 300 meter hurdles (37.50), and Matthew Anderson of Westfield (1:53.98) among top finishers in many other events Much more highlights and stories to come! While the weather may have slowed down the AA Championships it apparently had little effect on the athletes as numerous outsatanding performances were registered. Pete Dorrell ran negative splits in the 3200 to not only win but run an outstanding 9:10 effort. By best estimation Dorrell was 4:38 point at the 1600 and was able to close with a sub 4:32. The only athlete to give chase late in the race was Western Albemarle's Kyle Satterwhite. However, Satterwhite paid in the final laps and was fourth. The early work was done by Abingdon standout Griff Graves. Photo by David Fleenor Natalie Baird made quick work of the discus with a 159'4 on her opening throw. Next up for Baird is the shot put tomorrow morning. Harrisonburg is in excellent position to claim the boys title as Tim Bierle got the Streaks in the win column with his victory in the pole vault and the 4x800 took top honors with a sub 8 effort. Catherine White was an easy winner in the girls' 3200 and the Northside senior is 33% up on a possible triple. The Blacksburg girls destroyed the field in the 4x800. In the girls team competition, Charlottesville may be in the driver seat as Rashawnda James won the triple jump. James will be a huge factor in the sprints and long jump. The other contender, Louisa, has a little work to do to get back in the hunt. VHSL Group AA State Championships Day 1 Results

There are a handful of athletes capable of winning three individual state championships at the 2007 Group AA State Championships. Five athletes in particular have a hard but obtainable road to three state titles in Harrisonburg this weekend. Meanwhile, Catherine White (pictured right by David Fleenor at Arcadia) has been there and done that as last year the Northside distance star won all three distance races (3200, 1600, 800) at the AA State Championships. If White wins all three again, she will have finished her high school career with a legendary total of 15 state championships in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track.
MileStat.com's Brandon Miles makes his top five team prediction for the Group AA girls in this weekend's state championships. Charlottesville girls are picked to win led by Rashawnda James (pictured left by John Herzog at the Dogwood Track Classic) and a possible state meet record breaking 4x100 to follow up their indoor state title with an outdoor one. In a close second is Region II champs Park View, who will have very reliable points in the throwing events from Natalie Baird and her two fellow junior teammates Lauren Tomlinson and Julia Anyaugo in a possible 1-2 finish in both the shot put and discus. Their distance girls will have to deal with brutal heat and tough competition, but the Blacksburg girls should slip into the top three. Meanwhile, Kristin Smith and Catherine White can to score 30 or more (for Smith at least) the points for their teams in Rustburg and Northside to take top five showings. High school graduation ceremonies are overrated anyways, but the Spotsylvania County Schools officials forced kids to have to decide between this weekend's Group AA State Championships in Harrisonburg or high school graduations on Saturday. The conflict is impacting many of the teams and athletes from the area including the defending Group AA state outdoor champion girls' squad in Courtland. I know I did not cry in my mother's arms after high school graduation, but I definitely did at Great Meadows after winning a state cross country team title. Check out the the Free-Lance Star article on the graduation situation for the Spotsylvania track athletes. http://www.fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2007/052007/05302007/287903
