WOODBRIDGE, VA --
The Woodbridge boys and girls cross country squads simply rolled through the competition
at the Cardinal District Meet at Leesylvania Park's 2.9 mile course.
The Woodbridge boys,
ranked #9 in the state, placed their entire top seven in the top 12 for a team score of
20 points. Vikings senior Mike Lyng paced the squad as he won the race by a large margin
with his time of 15:09.9. Along with Lyng, Tim Stark (3rd, 15:55.6), Matt Drake (4th, 16:02.2)
Derek Grotheer (5th, 16:14.3), and Phil Skaggs (7th, 16:18.5) make up a squad that will
be in contention to win the Northwest Region title next week at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville.
Currently, the Commonwealth district champions, Albemarle look to be the favorites there.
Joining the Woodbridge boys at Panorama next week will be Forest Park (56 pts), C.D. Hylton (75 pts),
and Gar-Field (92 pts).
While C.D. Hylton's Jemissa Hess course record breaking time of 17:31.2 helped her squad's cause,
it wasn't enough to keep up with Woodbridge girls who know what the true essence of having a pack
is. First coming in for Woodbridge was Beth Fowler who placed 3rd with a time of 18:55.4, but
what ensued after that for Woodbridge was simply incredible. A monsoon of Lady Vikings came
in as they took up places seven through eleven with Lindsey Denty (7th, 19:36), Meagan Cleary
(8th, 19:38.8), Kara Frederick (9th, 19:49.5), Mary Ann Teribury (10th, 20:00.8), and Jenny
Barnes (11th, 20:15.2) to round up a team score of 37 points to secure the win.
Also advancing to the Northwest Region Meet will be C.D. Hylton (53 pts), Forest Park (69 pts),
and Gar-Field (74 pts).
