Region III Championships (Day 1): Brookville teams lead after wins from Epperson, Watts, & Reeves May 22, 2009

Brookville's Andrew Epperson cleared 15 feet for the first time in the pole vault and also broke the Region III meet record in the process. Epperson was not the only individual champion on Friday for day one competition at the Region III Championships held at Broadway High School. Telisha Watts nearly achieved a meet record height in the high jump after clearing 5'5" and making unsuccessful attempts of trying to achieve the meet record height of 5'6".   Brookville leads the team scoring for both boys (25 pts) and girls (30 pts) after the first day of competition thanks to event winners such as Epperson and Watts as well as 3200 winner Janel Reeves. Reeves, the Group AA state cross country champion this past November, dominated the Region III field with 32 second margin of victory in 11:26.74.   The Harrisonburg boys are in a good position to make run once again for another regional crown tomorrow after Dan Nafziger outdueled Jefferson Forest's Josh Morris in the 3200 meter run for a 9:44.67 win, while Alex Owah sprinted to the fastest qualifying times for Saturday's finals in the 100 (10.93) and 200 (22.04) meter dash.   Spotswood boys continued their regional dominance in the 4x800 with an 8:07.82 win, but will need to drop their times considerably next week at the state championships to keep up with Western Albemarle and Blacksburg having run well under 8 minutes this season. Spotswood's Brianna Mitchell posted an eye opener 12.22 clocking in the prelims of the 100 meter dash.   Region III Championships - Day 1 Results
