List of National Records & Top 10 Toughest to Break

Virginia National Record holders

Men's 4x800m Relay: Albemarle (7:36.99)

Though their outdoor record got caught by Long Beach-National-Record-Poly, their more impressive one has still yet to be touched. Not only did they break the old record but they shattered it and ran a time that could stand for a long time. Their splits to set this record, and mind you this was indoors, were: Zack Vrhovac 1:53.4, Luke Noble 1:54.9, Garrett Bradley 1:57.3, Anthony Kostelac 1:51.4. Last year Chaminade won in one of the fastest times ever and the fastest time ever at the Armory and that only 7:40.80, almost a full five seconds behind record pace.

Men's 300m Dash: Michael Cherry (33.05)

So 33.05 is impressive, I doubt you can find anyone who would disagree with that. But knowing that it was run at Boo Williams in 2013 just shoots this record out of the stratosphere! Let's not forget he had just run the 500 only an hour before that too!

Women's 300m (36.96) & 400m (51.93):

Francena McCorory (Bethel)

So, Michael Cherry set a bunch of records but what Francena did was just unreal. She not only broke records, she set the standard for American sprinting. It it literally impossible to decide which record is more impressive. In the 400, she ran 51.93 on a flat track with no competition and broke Sanya Richards' record that she set on a banked track! Or in the 300, she ran roughly half a second faster then any high schooler has ever run in the event. She is also the only girl to ever break 37 seconds in the 300.

Men's Triple Jump: Keith Holley (Bayside) 52-7.5

This record is Virginia's oldest National Record by a whopping 13 years. Obviously, it is also the state record and something that will not and has not been touched in quite some time. Last year we had a triple jumper go 51-3 and let's not forget Mr. Warren was already a state champion in two other states! So that tells you just how crazy this record is. You basically would have to start breaking 49/50ft as a freshman to be on pace for this mark. This record was set back in 1988.

Men's Mile: Alan Webb 2001 3:59.86

I doubt anyone does not know about this record! Alan not only joined the sub 4 club with this performance but he also became the one and only high schooler to ever achieve this honor. Though some have come close, he still is the only member of this group.

Girls 1000m Run: Sarah Bowman 2:43.40 (2005)

Even though a lot of these records are impressive, this one could be the most impressive from a racing standpoint. Blacksburg Coach James DeMarco actually announced this race and could not believe it himself when she kept splitting under and under the national record times. She eventually crossed the line in 2:43.40! What makes this record so impressive though is unlike Webb, she did this with a winning margin of 26 seconds which means she did this performance whilst also lapping nearly the entire field at the state meet! She is also the only AA national record holder from our state. No shock here, but she would go on to be on one of the most prolific groups of girls at the University of Tennessee.
