The Osbourn Park girls made it a clean sweep in the relays, while the Bethel boys were impressive in the 4x200 (1:31.17) and 4x400 (3:25.28) meter relays along with individual wins by Javell Bullard (pictured left by Brandon Miles) in the 300 and Sherrard Marrow in the 500. Bullard's sub 35 clocking on a flat track for the 300 meter dash was particular impressive in a state leading time of 34.99.
King's Fork pressed Bethel in the 4x200 as they ended settling for second place in a state auto qualifying time of 1:32.72. Keith Ricks had put his team out into the lead as opening leg, but Bethel's horses in Marrow and Bullard were able to give Bethel the advantage on later legs. Ricks also was second to Bullard in the 300 meter dash as he put up a swift time of 35.32 after winning the 55 meter dash earlier in 6.41, which was just off his co-state leading time of 6.37 from last weekend at Liberty. Ricks was lone double event winner on the boys' side of the meet as his 21'6" mark was enough to win the long jump competition. Javarenas Lazenby was also an event winner for King's Fork with a 6'3" clearance in the high jump.
Osbourn Park girls kicked off their relays winning trifecta in the 4x800 meter relay as a 2:19 third leg from Northwest Region cross country champion Ariel Karabinus put them in the lead for good as well as automatically qualify for state competition in a state best 9:42.78 victory. The Bethel girls were way out in front in the 4x200 meter relay, but a dropped baton allowed the Osbourn Park girls to come out as the eventual winners at 1:46.95. They were not far off a state leading time in the 4x400 meter relay either at 4:03.36. Misfortunte struck the Bethel girls again in the 4x400 as one of their legs went down on the curve to put them out of the race and unable to finish.
Michelle Ferguson was the lone individual winner for the Osbourn Park girls in the meet as she rolled through the 55 meter hurdles in 8.60, but had top three showings from the Hyters twin with Brittany in the 300 meter dash (2nd, 42.17) and Bethany in the 500 meter dash (3rd, 1:19.14). Brittany Hyter was also a runner-up in the long jump (16'10.50) behind West Potomac's Kat Lee who leaped to an automatic state qualifying mark of 17'11.75".
Westfield had winners in both the boys and girls 1000 meter races. Defending AAA state champion Matthew Anderson used a 60 second last 400 meters to pull away from the 1000 meter boys field in 2:38.07. Westfield senior Brittany Sevachko was also rolling in her final lap to win by nearly five seconds in 3:03.81.
A rare occassion for Thomas Edison to have two distance events winners in a invitational comprising mainly Northern Region schools as the Degfae twins, Tihut and Leoule Degfae teammated up on Potomac School's Johns Ross in the final 150 meters to blow past the private school state champion for a 1-2 finish with Tihut as the winner in 4:27.07 to automatically qualify for the AAA State Meet, while brother Leoule just missed an auto (4;27.24 standard) in second at 4:27.31.
The second winner for Edison in the meet was Spencer Rodriguez in the 3200 meter run as he pulled away from early leader Richard Arena of Osbourn Park in his first invite win at 10:11.92.
The winners in both the girls 1600 and 3200 meter races just missed auto state qualifying times at PG. Chrissy Sane of Centreville led a pack throughout much of the race and was able to withstand late challenges by Anneka Wilson of Potomac School and Carolyn Shaw of Langley for a first place run of 5:15.61 in the 1600 meter race.
Kelly Hagan of Lake Braddock and Tasia Potasinski of Westfield opened up a slight gap on the field in the 3200 meter race in the middle of the race and came down to the very end between the two as the pressed each other to near auto qualifiers. Hagan knew she had to extend her kick out to withstand the finishing speed of a 2:12 800 meter run in Potaskinski as she was able to do just that as Potasinski fell just several tenths of a second short of stealing the win at the win with Hagan at 11:27.24 and Potasinski at 11:27.6.
