Robert Reynolds of Lee-Davis nearly pulled off an improbable triple in the 1600, 500, and 1000 meter races at Friday's CVTF Clinic Invitational held at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond. Reynolds closed well over the last 400 meters in the 1600 meter run to win by nine seconds at 4:38.47. The Lee-Davis senior was toeing the line not too long after in the 500 meter dash as he used his endurance to outlast the field for a 1:11.15 victory. Reynolds nearly picked up a third win in the meet against two quality runners in Davis Barry of Patrick Henry and Brayden Burleigh of Midlothian in the 1000 meter, but a fresh Barry was able to hold Reynolds off in 2:45.08.
Lee-Davis teammate Amanda Lineberry had the same full plate of races to go through at the Ashe Center with the 1600-500-1000 triple. Lineberry dominated the 1600 meter race with a time of 5:28.43, had a fair showing in the 500 meter dash (5th, 16:26.31), and ran just out of steam to earn a second win of the meet in the 1000 meter dash as Kacen Delphin of Manchester moved up from the sprints to win in her 1000 meter debut at 3:17.27 with Lineberry being just nipped for the win at 3:17.32 for second place.
Matthew Armentrout of Deep Run had the top performance in the field events by clearing 14 feet in the pole vault. The defending AAA state outdoor champion cleared an indoor personal best height as he had cleared over 14 feet several times last spring in the outdoor season including his 15 foot best at the state meet, but had never gone over the height prior to this weekend indoors. Prince George's Alex Habermehl gave him competition through 13 feet as the senior cleared a personal best indoor height of 13 feet, while matching his all-time best from outdoors.
Cosby juniors Anthony Carlie and Joseph Thomas pulled in a 1-2 finish for the Titans in the 55 meter dash with first and second place clockings of 6.81 and 6.90 respectively in the 55 meter dash.
The Lee-Davis girls had a similar top two sweep in the 55 meter hurdles with Regina Davis (8.92) and Montasia Golden (9.23). Golden also finished second in the 300 meter dash (45.37) later on as Mills Godwin's Karis Crosby, a past state qualifier in the event, had a great start on her competition to a 44.38 victory.
James River senior Reid Taylor, who waited a little too late to attempt to reel in Reynolds of Lee-Davis in the 500 meter dash (2nd, 1:11.87), did not make the same mistake in the 300 meter dash later in the meet as he was able to sweep past Henrico's Raquamm Smith in the final steps for a 39.90 win.
Colonial Heights had three different individuals win events at the Ashe Center led by Shae Wilbon in the 500 meter dash (1:24.41), Megan Sinclair in the high jump (5'0"), and Chris Montgomery in the 55 meter dash (8.20).
55 meter dash state leader Ruth Hunt of Heritage was not able to match her state leading time of 7.24 from the New York Armory, but still rolled out a swift time on the spikeless Ashe track surface at 7.42 to win the sprint event easily.
