Virginia Indoor Weekly Rundown: Week #2

CNU Winter Frolic Invitational

December 11-12 @Freeman Center in Newport News

Girls Highlights

  • Lauryn Ghee (Grassfield) opened her season in a big way running a US #1 39.54 in the 300 to take that title by nearly a whole second in a pretty decent field. She was a member of the 4x200 that would run 1:45.29 to take that relay crown.
  • Grassfield's Taylor Gorum shot putted a very respectable 40-2 mark in the shot put competition to move into second in the state rankings.
  • James River's hurdling specialist turned sprint specialist Mallory Pitchford had a killer double winning both the 55m dash (7.18) and 55m hurdles (8.46) in her first time on the track this year.
  • Bria and Brooke Stith had a great time showing the  5A State they are going to be scoring a lot of points again this year. Bria took the high jump with a clearance of 5-4 and Brooke took the 500m dash in 1:20.49.
  • Defending outdoor 3200m state champion Doria Martingayle (Princess Anne) opened her season with a bang running a 11:10.23 to take the 3200m run over Lafayette's Delaney Savedge and Deep Run's Lauren Kenny.
  • In the triple jump competition there was quite the battle for first with three girls separated by just 3.5 inches. Victoria Gibson of Princess Anne took the title with her 37-7.5 mark over Tiffany Bullock and Maya Hanks.

Boys Highlights

  • Grassfield's Grant Holloway stole the show running what seemed to be a cruising US #1 1:04.41 in the 500m dash. If that wasn't enough he also cleared a 6-8 in the high jump to take the crown over tough competition and then closed the meet with a 47.07 split on the 4x400 to take his team from around 5th to 2nd.
  • Grafton ran a phenomenal 4x800 dashing past their competitors to take home the title in a US #1 8:07.37 clocking. Anchoring this team after having run a stellar 3200m run earlier in the week was Owens.
  • Michael Tyler of Lafayette may have no been triumphant in the high jump here but he did leap to a 6-9 US #1 earlier in the week. He finished second in the high jump competition to Grant Holloway but managed to clear 6-6.
  • James River's Caleb Wilson had a huge PR at the perfect time when he dropped his 55m dash time from 6.69 to 6.56 to take the 55m title here.
  • Princess Anne's Harrison Martingayle loved the shorter distance from XC and crushed the elite competition in the 3200 to come away with a solid 9:43 victory over Kellam's Ryan Drew.
  • In the most exciting finish of the weekend Deep Run's Bashir Mosavel-Lo edged out Grafton's Price Owens in the 1600 4:32.34 to 4:32.54.
  • Isiah Norris (Bethel) ran a solid 7.56 to take the 55m hurdles crown in a time that was just shy of his already state leading 7.54
