MileStat Awards: Who Is Athlete of the Year!?

First, congratulations to all the winners and everyone that competed this season. This was truly the best indoor season in Virginia history. To receive an award you really had to step it up and win when it mattered most. These awards are based on the entirety of the season with a greater importance on states and nationals. An athlete may only appear once for general awards (athlete of the year award not included). These awards are all prestigious but listed with the highest honors being listed first. An athlete up for multiple awards is only named for the highest award.

Awards: Athlete of the Year, Male & Female AOY, Sprinter/Distance/Hurdler/Thrower/Jumper/Vaulter of The Year/ Coach of The Year/ Class Awards and Classification Awards

Athlete of the Year

Grant Holloway

Grassfield - 2016

National Record 55H & 60H, VA State Record Long Jump, US #2 All-Time Pentathlon

Grant W. Holloway really earned that middle initial this year. He finished the season out as the best 55 hurdler, 60 hurdler, pentathlete, 500m runner and as the nation's second best long jumper and 55m dash runner. Of course all of these accolades are on top of his monstrous 46 points at the 6A State meet. He would also be one of the top 300m runners in the country but elected to not run the event this year. He competed 22 times this year and went 21-1. His sole loss is pictured below in what was a photo finish between him and the Lyles brothers at 6A states in the 55.

He also set the state record this year by winning the most state titles in a career to add just another title to his illustrious career. His performances though were what separated him from the rest of the VA field this year. In any other year it would be easy to pick a national record holder for this award but this season there were four athletes who broke national records and it came down to world rankings to break the tie between Grant and Drew Hunter.
