CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Virginia Tech\'s track & field teams competed at
the Carolina Classic today at the Eddie Smith Field House. Four
Hokies won their respective events. Three of the four winners today
are from Tech\'s No. 25 men\'s team.
Tamara Burns (Jr.-Tr., Elm Creek, Neb.) won the women\'s 20 lb. weight
throw event in an NCAA automatic qualifying and new school record
mark of 68\'7.25\" (20.91m). With her mark, Burns currently leads the
ACC and ranks fifth in the nation. Kristen Callan (So., Monroe, N.Y.)
placed third in the weight throw with her third NCAA provisional
qualifying throw this season of 61\'9.75\" (18.84m). Burns and Callan
set personal bests today.
The No. 1 men\'s 35 lb. weight throw athlete in the nation, Spryidon
Jullien (Jr., Athens, Greece), won the event with his third NCAA
automatic qualifying mark of the season with 71\'0.50\" (21.65m).
William Collins (Jr., Chesterfield, Va.) finished third in the event
with his personal best of 56\'8\" (17.27m).
Sven Hahn (Jr.-Tr., Stutggart, Germany), ranked fourth in the NCAA
division I and second in the ACC, won then men\'s shot put with his
third NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 60\'0.50\" (18.30m).
Eighth-ranked Ryan Norwood (Sr., Cheyenne, Wyo.) took third place,
Steve Huntzinger (So., Fair fax, Va.) placed fifth and Collins was
sixth.
Brian Mondschein (Jr., Hummelstown, Pa.) won the men\'s pole vault in
a season best jump of 16\'8.75\" (5.10m). Adam Bingaman (So., New
Berlinville, Pa.) and Joe Samaniuk (So., Rexford., N. Y.) set
personal bests in the event. Bingaman jumped 16\'2.75\" (4.95m) for
third place and Samaniuk placed fourth with 15\'9\" (4.80m). Fifth
place in the pole vault went to Daniel Gore (Jr., Leonardtown, Md.).
Mondschein, Bingaman and Daniel Gore currently rank 3rd, 4th and 5th
in the ACC.
Next weekend The Hokies host the Virginia Tech Challenge, on Feb.
11-12. The meet includes 28 schools, with eight representing the ACC
and three from the SEC. Six of the schools participating boast teams
ranked nationally in the Trackwire 25 poll.
