Six Hokies score points for Tech today at the ACC Championships

Tech women are in third place while the men are fifth after the second day

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Virginia Tech had six athletes score points on the second day of the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Florida State\'s Mike Long Track. Other highlights included six Tech runners qualifying for Saturday\'s finals and several Hokies posting personal record times in the sprint and distance events.

Tech\'s six scores today were Sven Hahn, Brian MacPhee, Jennifer Wade, Erin Mahony, Saskia Triesscheijn and Gunild Kreb. Hahn (Jr., Stutggart, Germany) placed third in the men\'s discus out of the 14 finishers with a throw of 178\' (54.25m). Hahn\'s third place finish earned him All-ACC honors and gave Tech six team points. Hahn is still the second-ranked men\'s discus thrower in the NCAA east region and ranks ninth in the nation.

MacPhee (Sr., Golden Lake, Ont.) threw the discus 154\' (46.94m) to place eighth, which is worth one team point. Vikas Gowda (North Carolina), the No. 1 men\'s discus athlete in the nation, won the ACC individual title in the event with his mark of 203\'5\" (62.00m).

Wade (Jr., Roanoke, Va.) earned three points for her sixth place performance in the women\'s pole vault. Wade cleared a personal record height of 11\'9.75\" (3.60m), which ranks third in Tech\'s all-time performance list.

Mahony (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) tied for seventh place in the women\'s pole vault and earned 1.50 points. Rhian Jenks (North Carolina) became the ACC champion in the event with her jump of 12\'9.50\" (3.90m).

Saskia Triesscheijn (Jr., Berlin, Germany) finished the heptathlon in third place with 5,367 points while Gunild Kreb (Jr., Winterbach, Germany) had a point total of 5,094 which placed her fourth in the event. Triesscheijn\'s top-three performance earned six points for Tech\'s women\'s team and All-ACC honors. Kreb earned five points for the Hokie women.

Indoor All-American Tamara Burns (Jr., Elm Creek, Neb.) threw the shot put 45\'1\" (13.74m) to place 13th in the event. Kimberli Barrett (Miami), the No. 1 women\'s shot put athlete in the nation, had a winning throw of 58\'10.25\" (17.94m) to claim the ACC title in the event.

The Hokies had six runners/hurdlers qualify for Saturday\'s finals in their respective event. Victoria Green (Jr, Chesapeake, Va.) qualified for the women\'s 400 meter finals slated for Saturday at 2:10 p.m. by placing eighth in the preliminaries with a personal record time of 55.35. Green ran the third fastest 400 meter time in school history today.

Jackie Nicholson (Sr., Clayton, N.J.) qualified for the women\'s 400-meter hurdle finals on Saturday at 2:55 p.m. with her seventh place prelim time of 1:01.33. Nicholson\'s time is a current school season best.

Anthony Jenkins (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) clocked a 400-meter hurdle prelim time of 53.74 to grab sixth place in the men\'s race and qualify for the finals on Saturday at 3:05 p.m.

Marie Giles (Sr., Hampton, Va.) ran the second fastest women\'s 800 meter time in school history, 2:08.26, to finish in third place out of the 24 runners in the prelims. Meredith Brooks (So., Burke, Va.) had a time of 2:09.56 to grab fourth place in the race. Both Giles and Brooks who are new NCAA regional qualifiers will run in the finals on Saturday at 2:35 p.m.

Natalie Sherbak (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) ran the women\'s 1,500 meters in a school season best time of 4:32.01 to place 10th out of the 26 competitors in the event. Sherbak\'s 10th place time qualified her for the 1,500 meter finals on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Sherbak is an indoor All-ACC selection for running in the conference champion distance medley relay team in February.

The women\'s discus throw opens up Saturday\'s events at 10 a.m. The relays, sprint and distance finals go from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The championships conclude with an awards presentation at 4:45 p.m.
