A Flood of stellar VA performances in NC

CHAPEL HILL, NC -- A handful of Virginia teams including Deep Creek, West Springfield, Great Bridge, and Western Branch ventured south to compete at the Easter Challenge at the University of North Carolina\'s year old indoor track facility.

Deep Creek boys finish second in the team scoring (42 pts) to Mount Tabor of NC (48 pts) with strong sprint event performances. Both John Hyman in the 300 (35.21) and Derron Flood in the 500 (1:05.62) posted state best times for Deep Creek, while Flood\'s 500 time now ranks him currently second in the nation.

West Springfield distance star Jeff Day had an amazing double as he took second to All-American honored runner Matt Debole of Moun Tabor (NC) in both the 1600 (4:21.41) and 1000 (2:33.41). Spartan teammate John Cook (3rd, 2:34.60) and Deep Creek\'s Desmond Perkins (5th, 2:34.66) also made for one fast 1000, which included 3 of the state\'s 4 fastest times so far this season.

In relay action, Deep Creek boys 4x400 won in a state best time of 3:24.41, while a non \"A\" team of West Springfield took second in the 4x800 (8:20.27).

Great Bridge\'s Brian Webb took the victory in the pole vault as he maintained his best for the season at 14 feet. Two more joined the 50+ feet club for the season with two Great Bridge throwers in James Nixon (55-11) and Joseph Jones (51-4) taking 1-2 in the shot put.

Two of the top three teams in the girls\' team scoring were Virginia squads with West Springfield finishing second(38 pts) and Western Branch taking third (34 pts).

Western Branch girls looked impressive in the sprints with Tosin Oluwole third in the 55 (7.31), Lesie Treherne second in the 300 (41.40), and Marquita Allen winning the 500 (1:19.30).

West Springfield senior Huma Husain had an equally impressive 1600/1000 double to male counterpart, teammate Jeff Day as Husain took wins in both the 1600 (5:05.05) and 1000 (3:02.87). Selina Sekulic of Ocean Lakes was a strong second to Husain with a time of 5:07.61. West Springfield girls swept the individual distance events with Kelly Ann Osborn winning the 3200 in a time of 11:48.73.

In relay action, Western Branch girls ran an swift 4:01.84 to take the 4x400 win, while West Springfield finished second in the 4x800 (10:14.34).
