Three Virginia high school juniors competed this past weekend in Puerto Rico at the Caribbean Scholastic Invitational and all three came out as winners from their trip to the Greater Antilles with Hampton's Chantel Ray in the 100 meter hurdles, Cave Spring's Katie Fortner in the 1500 meter run, and Forest Park's Ricky Morgan in the 400 meter dash. All three were selected by the National Scholastic Sports Foundation for the all-expenses paid for trip.
Ray was just a few ticks off her personal best and state meet record setting time from the week before at Todd Stadium with a 13.74 clocking in the 100 meter hurdles to win the event over another U.S. high school hurdler in Dale Quenee'. Fortner was able to pull away from a girls' 1500 meter field including several top middle distance runners from Caribbean Island nations and territories with a 4:40.82 (converts to a 5:01 1600m time). Group AAA 400 meter dash state runner-up Ricky Morgan had the second fastest time in the prelims of the 400 behind fellow countryman Marquavious Johnson, but reversed the order in the finals with a swift 47.50 performance to take first down in Carolina, Puerto Rico.
