Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Standards

Q: How were the standards determined?

A: The standards are based on the average of the 8th best season performance over the last 6 years from the schools assigned to each Conference, Region, and State classification. This is how the State Meet standards were determined when we first began using qualifying standards. The data was obtained from the MileStat.com database.

Q: Why are there differences in the Conference/Regional standards for a given event within the same classification?

A: The standards are relative to the schools assigned to that Conference/Region and reflect the strengths and weaknesses of those schools. Some Conferences have an abundance of schools that are strong in a particular area (throws, distance, sprints, etc.) and not as strong in other events.

Q: Why have qualifying standards?

A: Qualifying standards help assure the best performers are competing at the championship levels. They provide an opportunity for qualifying athletes to compete at the championship level despite an injury or sub-par performance in a lower level championship meet.
